The series finale of The Boys has sparked a lot of discussion online after it debuted with a 6.7 rating on IMDb. According to early viewer data, this makes it the lowest-rated season finale in the show’s entire run, marking a surprising drop for a series that has usually received strong critical and audience scores.

The show had previously maintained much higher scores across its earlier season finales, making this result stand out even more.

Looking back at previous seasons, the contrast is clear. The Season 1 finale, “You Found Me,” was rated 9.1. Season 2’s finale, “What I Know,” reached 9.4, which is one of the highest points in the series. Season 3 ended with “The Instant White-Hot Wild,” scoring 8.3. Season 4, with the episode “Department of Dirty Tricks,” returned to a strong 9.1. Compared to these, Season 5’s finale sits significantly lower at 6.7.

Much of the online reaction has focused on how the story ended rather than the performances or production quality. Many fans expressed disappointment with the direction of key character arcs in the final episode. The discussion has been especially intense because The Boys built its reputation over the years as a sharp, bold, and often unpredictable take on superhero stories.

One of the main points of criticism is the ending of Homelander’s storyline. For five seasons, he was set up as an almost unstoppable force. However, in the finale, he is stripped of his powers before being killed by Billy Butcher. Some viewers felt this made the final confrontation feel less intense than expected, since it removed the superpowered clash many had been waiting for.

Another major talking point is Billy Butcher’s final arc. After killing Homelander, he attempts to release a virus designed to eliminate all Supes. This forces Hughie to stop him by shooting him. Many fans felt this turn happened too quickly and did not allow enough time for the emotional weight of the decision to fully land.

There was also criticism around pacing. The finale runs just over an hour, but some viewers felt it tried to resolve too many storylines at once. As a result, certain character arcs, including Starlight’s resistance movement and Ryan’s future, felt rushed or only briefly addressed.

Some fans also pointed out that the ending leaned heavily into a darker tone. Instead of a clear victory or hopeful conclusion, the story ends with loss on both sides. While this fits the show’s often cynical style, some viewers felt it undercut earlier themes of resistance, teamwork, and hope that were present in earlier seasons.

Despite the criticism, the finale still delivered a conclusion to a long-running story that has been unfolding since the start of The Boys. It closed the journeys of its main characters and wrapped up several long-running conflicts, even if not everyone agreed with how those endings were handled.

The 6.7 IMDb score reflects a divided response rather than a simple judgment. While some viewers appreciated the bold choices, others felt the finale did not fully match the high expectations set by earlier seasons.
