Christopher Nolan Chose Lupita Nyong’o as His First Pick for Helen of Troy in ‘The Odyssey’ Director Reveals
Christopher Nolan has spoken about why he chose Lupita Nyong’o for the role of Helen of Troy in his upcoming film The Odyssey, and he made it clear she was always at the top of his list.
In an interview published by ELLE, Nolan explained that the strength and presence of the character mattered just as much as any idea of beauty. He said Nyong’o had exactly what he needed for the role and that he did not hesitate when thinking about casting her. According to him, she brought a mix of power, emotion, and calm that fit Helen of Troy in a deeper way than surface-level looks.
Nolan said, “The strength and the poise were so important to the character of Helen. And Lupita makes it look effortless. I’m sure there’s a tremendous amount of discipline and training that goes into projecting that kind of poise and feeling the emotion bubbling beneath the character.” He added that she had all the layers he wanted for the role and that she was someone he was strongly committed to working with.
He also made it clear that Nyong’o was not a backup choice or a late decision. Nolan said he was strongly drawn to her from the beginning and wanted her in the film as soon as the project started coming together. He described her as someone who could carry both the mythic scale of the story and the emotional depth needed for the character.
The film itself is a large-scale adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, bringing together a major ensemble cast. But Nolan emphasized that even in a project full of big names, Nyong’o stood out as a key part of his vision. Her role as Helen of Troy is central to the myth, and Nolan’s comments suggest he built part of the character around her presence.
Nyong’o herself said she felt honored to take on such an iconic role, but Nolan’s remarks highlight how intentional the casting was from his side. Rather than treating Helen as only a symbol of beauty, he focused on performance, strength, and emotional weight.
His approach fits with how he has described the rest of the cast as well. He has often spoken about wanting actors who bring something real and grounded, even in a mythological setting. In this case, Nyong’o was presented as a core example of that idea.
For Nolan, Helen of Troy needed more than myth. She needed a performer who could carry both history and humanity. In his words, that is exactly what he found in Nyong’o.
