‘Supergirl’s’ Reported Budget Revealed — Here’s What It Needs to Break Even
Supergirl is gearing up to be one of DC’s biggest upcoming films, but there’s already a lot of talk about its cost and what it needs to earn at the box office to be considered a success.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, it stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, with supporting roles from actors including Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa. The film is scheduled for release on June 26, and is produced by DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, according to Warner Bros. production details.
The story follows Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, as she travels across space with her dog Krypto. Her journey takes a dark turn when she meets a young girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll and becomes involved in a violent revenge mission. The film is based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic storyline, which presents Kara as a more hardened and emotional character compared to Superman.
Reports on the film’s budget have not been officially confirmed, but industry estimates revealed by Puck News place it at around $170 million. Based on typical marketing and distribution costs, analysts suggest the movie would likely need to earn about $425 million worldwide to be considered profitable.
That figure puts it in a similar range to other recent superhero productions, including The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is reported to have a comparable budget, and below the higher-cost Superman film, which is estimated at around $225 million. Because of this, Supergirl would not need to become a massive billion-dollar hit, but it would still require strong global performance to be seen as successful.
Industry reporting notes that Warner Bros. would ideally want the film to cross the $500 million mark worldwide, especially as the studio’s recent lineup has had mixed results. However, expectations are being balanced with the current state of the superhero genre, where both DC and Marvel projects have seen more unpredictable box office results in recent years.
The film arrives at a time when the DC Universe is still being rebuilt under James Gunn and Peter Safran. Early audience reactions to Milly Alcock’s brief appearance in Superman were positive, which may help build interest in her standalone film. The tone of Supergirl is expected to lean more into space adventure and darker emotional storytelling, with Gunn previously describing the character as more rebellious and complex than earlier versions.
Jason Momoa is also set to appear as Lobo, adding another major comic book character to the film’s lineup. The supporting cast expands the cosmic side of the DC Universe, suggesting a broader sci-fi direction for future projects.
According to production and industry estimates, Supergirl will need steady box office performance and strong audience reception to meet its financial goals, rather than relying on blockbuster-level overperformance.
