Javier Bardem Says De Niro and Nolte Inspired His Role in the Upcoming ‘Cape Fear’ – Here’s How
The cast of the new Apple TV adaptation of Cape Fear has opened up about how earlier versions of the story shaped their performances, especially the iconic 1991 film directed by Martin Scorsese. The information comes from interviews shared with Entertainment Weekly, where the actors discussed the pressure and inspiration behind stepping into roles once played by Hollywood legends.
In the new version of Cape Fear, Javier Bardem takes on the role of Max Cady, the dangerous and unpredictable character originally played by Robert De Niro in the 1991 film. Bardem said he was fully aware of the weight that comes with following such a famous performance.
He explained that the first thing he thought about when he was cast was not trying to compete with De Niro’s version. Instead, he focused on respecting what had already been done.
“Don’t even try, Javier, to get even close to what De Niro did with that iconic performance,” Bardem said he told himself after getting the role.
He also admitted that he initially felt intimidated by the idea of stepping into such a well-known character. He said he reminded himself that he was far from De Niro’s level in that specific role, and that he needed to approach it in his own way rather than copying what came before.
Bardem even arranged a private screening of Scorsese’s Cape Fear in Madrid so he could revisit De Niro’s performance on the big screen. He described watching it alone as a meaningful moment in his preparation.
“I watched the movie once again on a big screen. I made it happen,” Bardem said.
He added that he treated the experience almost like a personal tribute, saying he quietly asked for De Niro’s blessing while watching the film. For him, it was less about comparison and more about respect for the original work.
Amy Adams, who also stars in the new series, spoke about the influence of Jessica Lange, who played a key role in the 1991 film. Adams said she was not directly trying to copy Lange’s performance, but she admired the balance of strength and vulnerability in the character.
Patrick Wilson, another lead in the series, focused more on Nick Nolte’s performance in the earlier film. Nolte played Sam Bowden in the 1991 version, and Wilson said he has long admired his work as an actor.
Wilson said Nolte’s screen presence had a strong impact on him growing up and helped shape his own interest in acting. He pointed to Nolte’s raw and unpolished style as something he always found powerful.
“I love Nick Nolte. I really do,” Wilson said. “He’s one of those top guys to me that defined the reasons that I wanted to do this.”
He added that Nolte’s performances always felt real and emotional, without looking overly polished, which is something he tried to bring into his own role.
The new Cape Fear series, created by Nick Antosca, brings together a fresh cast while directly connecting to earlier versions of the story that began with the 1962 film and continued with Scorsese’s 1991 adaptation. Each generation of actors has brought a different approach to the material, and the new cast is clearly aware of the legacy they are stepping into.
As the premiere approaches, the actors continue to acknowledge that they are working in the shadow of major film icons. At the same time, they are trying to build something new while still honoring the performances that came before them.
