Fans of the “Minions” movies have often wondered why the small yellow henchmen who work for Gru, voiced by Steve Carell, are all male. The question has come up many times since the characters first appeared in the 2010 film “Despicable Me,” where they quickly became one of the most popular parts of the franchise.

According to Pierre Coffin, who co-directed the films and also provides the voices of the Minions, the decision was based on his own creative thinking while designing the characters.

In a 2015 interview with The Wrap, he gave a simple explanation. He said, “Seeing how dumb and stupid they often are, I just couldn’t imagine Minions being girls.”

The Minions were originally created as side characters, but they quickly became the most recognizable part of the franchise. Their strange language, chaotic behavior, and simple personalities helped them become global icons. Over time, they moved from background characters to main stars in their own films, including the “Minions” spin-off movies.

Even though the Minions are all male in design and voice work, the franchise itself includes many important female characters. In the “Despicable Me” series, Julie Andrews voices Gru’s mother Marlena. Miranda Cosgrove plays Margo, one of Gru’s adopted daughters. Kristen Wiig voices Lucy Wilde, an Anti-Villain League agent who becomes part of Gru’s family. In “Minions,” Sandra Bullock voices the villain Scarlet Overkill.

The 2022 film “Minions: The Rise of Gru” also introduced more major female roles. Taraji P. Henson voiced the leader of the Vicious 6, while Michelle Yeoh played Master Chow, who teaches martial arts to the Minions.

The Minions themselves also have names that fans often recognize, such as Kevin, Stuart, Bob, Otto, Dave, and Tim. Pierre Coffin has explained that these names were chosen with playful meanings behind them. He said Kevin is meant to suggest a leader figure, while Stuart is meant to reflect a more lazy personality. Bob is linked to the idea of being short. Coffin shared these meanings in the same interview with The Wrap, showing how even the names were designed with humor in mind.

The franchise continues to grow, with a new animated film titled “Minions & Monsters” ready for release. The project is directed by Pierre Coffin and written with Brian Lynch, and it will be produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film is planned as the third Minions prequel and the seventh film in the wider “Despicable Me” universe.

The story is set in the 1920s and follows the Minions as they try to make their own monster movie in Old Hollywood. The cast includes returning voices as well as new additions such as Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, Phil LaMarr, and Trey Parker.

The film is scheduled to premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 21, before its theatrical release in the United States on July 1.
