Nicolas Cage Explains the Story Behind Naming His Son Kal-El, Superman’s Birth Name
Nicolas Cage has explained the story behind his decision to name his son Kal-El, a name that is strongly connected to Superman’s mythology but, according to him, was not chosen out of fandom.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Cage spoke about his son Kal-El, whom he shares with his third wife Alice Kim. The discussion focused on how unusual the name is and why he decided to use it. Cage made it clear that the choice was not driven by a deep attachment to Superman as a character.
He said that the name itself was what attracted him. In his words, “The Superman thing that happened, but I liked that it’s a name. It’s a genuine name. It’s actually a Hebrew name. It means the voice of God.” He added that he always found “Kal-El” beautiful as a name on its own, separate from any superhero meaning.
Kal-El is known in DC Comics mythology as the birth name of Superman. On the planet Krypton, Superman is not called Clark Kent. His original name is Kal-El, and it reflects Kryptonian language and identity. In the story, his father Jor-El sends him to Earth before Krypton’s destruction. The name has since become one of the most recognizable parts of Superman’s origin, representing both his alien heritage and his connection to something larger than human life.
Cage said his decision had more to do with meaning and sound than comic book fandom. He also admitted that he was not especially obsessed with Superman growing up. Instead, he said he was more interested in darker or more monstrous characters like Ghost Rider and The Incredible Hulk. That detail adds context to why he does not frame the name as a superhero tribute.
There is also a deeper Hollywood connection to Superman in Cage’s career. In the 1990s, he was cast to play Superman in a film called Superman Lives, directed by Tim Burton. The project became one of the most famous unmade superhero films in Hollywood history. It went through major development problems, including script changes and budget concerns, and was eventually canceled before production could be completed.
Even though the film never happened, Cage’s association with Superman never fully disappeared. Years later, he briefly appeared as Superman in the 2023 film The Flash, using digital effects and archival-style imagery to recreate the character in a multiverse sequence.
Speaking about that appearance in another interview, Cage expressed surprise at how the final scene was constructed. He said, “When I went to the picture, it was me fighting a giant spider. I did not do that. That was not what I did.” The comment reflected how different the final version was from what he originally performed.
The name Kal-El, therefore, sits at an unusual intersection between mythology, personal taste, and Hollywood history. It connects ancient-language interpretation, where “El” is often associated with divinity in Hebrew-derived traditions, with modern pop culture shaped by DC Comics.
For Cage, however, the meaning remains simple. He chose the name because he liked it, not because of Superman’s legacy. Still, given his near-casting in Superman Lives and his later return to the role in The Flash, the connection between his son’s name and the superhero mythos remains hard to separate completely.
