A new look at the upcoming Resident Evil reboot reveals how director Zach Cregger is shaping the film using his personal experience with the video games.

Cregger, who is both directing and co-writing the film, explained that he has been a longtime fan of the Resident Evil games. He said he has played them many times over the years, and that experience played a big role in how he is approaching the movie.

Instead of focusing only on action or professional soldiers, Cregger wanted the film to feel closer to how an average player experiences the games. He said his goal was to bring that feeling of tension, confusion, and fear into the story.

He explained his personal connection to the games and how it shaped his direction. He said, “I have played the games countless times.”

Cregger also talked about how he struggled while playing, especially with aiming and surviving under pressure. That frustration, he said, helped him understand what makes the games feel intense for players.

According to him, this is why the main character in the reboot is not a trained soldier or expert fighter. Instead, the story follows a normal person who suddenly gets trapped in a deadly outbreak and has to survive with little experience or preparation.

The film follows a character named Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, who works as a medical courier. His routine job takes a dangerous turn when a viral outbreak spreads, forcing him into a fight for survival. As the situation grows worse, he becomes involved with the Umbrella Corporation and the creatures created by the infection.

Cregger said he wanted to capture the feeling of fear and uncertainty that defines the original games. Rather than building a story around heroes who already know how to handle danger, he wanted the audience to experience it from someone who is completely unprepared.

He also explained that the movie is not based on a single game storyline. Instead, it draws from the overall feeling and tone of the franchise. The focus is on survival horror, where danger increases step by step and the main character has to adapt quickly or die.

The director’s approach is meant to keep the tension high throughout the film. He wants viewers to feel like they are inside the world of the game, where every decision matters and mistakes can be deadly.

The reboot is part of a new attempt to bring the Resident Evil franchise back to theaters after previous adaptations received mixed reactions. This version is being developed with Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions involved in the project.

The cast includes Austin Abrams as Bryan, along with Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, and Johnno Wilson in supporting roles. Each of them plays characters connected to the outbreak and the Umbrella Corporation’s experiments.

According to production details, filming began in 2025 in Prague, and the movie is scheduled for release on September 18.

With this reboot, Cregger is aiming for a more grounded and tense horror experience that reflects what players feel when they first enter the Resident Evil world, especially when they are not ready for what is coming next.
