Disney’s Live-Action ‘Moana’ Set for Strong Domestic Opening Weekend
Disney’s live-action Moana is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on July 10. According to the Box Office report, the movie is expected to enter a very busy summer period. It will arrive in a market where several other big films are already drawing attention, including Universal’s Minions & Monsters in its second weekend and Disney’s own Toy Story 5 in its fourth weekend. This means Moana will not have the box office all to itself, but it still has strong support going into release.
The report explains that Moana will get a full IMAX and premium large format rollout during its opening weekend. This is often important for big studio films because it helps boost ticket sales. The movie is currently tracking to earn $80 million to $105 million over its domestic opening weekend.
One week after Moana releases, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is expected to arrive in theaters, which could shift audience attention quickly. Because of this, Moana will need to perform strongly right away.
A big part of the film’s appeal comes from its music and returning characters. Dwayne Johnson is coming back as Maui, a role he originally voiced in the animated films. The report suggests this could help bring in fans who already know and like the character. It also mentions that the soundtrack may become a key attraction, with songs possibly leading to sing-along experiences in theaters.
Shawn Robbins notes that while the animated sequel released in 2024 had mixed reactions, the Moana brand still has strong recognition. He compares it to other Disney live-action remakes like The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid, which all built large audiences from long-standing popularity. In his view, Moana still has enough fan support to perform well even after the recent sequel.
The report also points out that online reactions to trailers have been divided. However, it argues that the core audience for this movie is not mainly online. Instead, it is expected to come from families, especially parents and younger children. Many of these viewers may not have seen the original Moana in theaters, which could help bring in a new generation of audiences.
Shawn Robbins explains this clearly in the report by saying, “Moana’s popularity likely remains sturdy enough for this live-action remake to stand on its own.” He also notes that family audiences have been very important for similar Disney remakes in the past, and that trend could continue here.
The film is directed by Thomas Kail in his feature film debut. It is written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller and produced by Dwayne Johnson along with Hiram and Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Filming took place in Atlanta and Hawaii between July and November 2024.
The story follows Moana as she leaves her island of Motunui for the first time after being called by the ocean. She travels beyond the reef with Maui to restore balance to her world. The cast includes Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, Dwayne Johnson as Maui, and other supporting actors playing key roles from the original story.
Overall, the report suggests that Disney is positioning Moana as one of its major summer releases, with strong potential despite heavy competition and shifting audience attention later in the month.
