Camila Mendes Is Still Winning Hearts as Teela Even After ‘Masters of the Universe’ Had a Rough Opening Weekend
Few casting announcements in recent memory generated as much immediate excitement as the news that Camila Mendes would be suiting up as Teela in Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action reimagining of ‘Masters of the Universe’.
Known primarily to audiences for her years on ‘Riverdale’, Mendes represented a bold swing for a franchise trying to recapture the nostalgic magic of one of the most beloved toy lines and animated series of the 1980s. That gamble appears to have paid off creatively, even if the film itself is still fighting to prove its commercial legs.
The images making the rounds this weekend show Mendes sharing caroussel of images on Instagram, a collection of selfies alongside behind-the-scenes photos of her in full Teela costume alongside her co-star Nicholas Galitzine.
The images offers yet another look at the gold-and-white bodysuit that became a talking point well before the film ever hit theaters.
The Instagram post landed at an interesting moment in the film’s release cycle. ‘Masters of the Universe’ is projected to close out its opening weekend with a three-day global total of roughly $54.3 million worldwide, comprising $29.3 million from the domestic box office and an additional $25 million from international theaters.
While the domestic figure technically marks a franchise first, it is an underwhelming start for a movie that cost nearly $200 million to produce, not including marketing.
The numbers paint a complicated picture for a film that clearly has an audience rooting for it emotionally. Only 5% of viewers were under the age of 12 and only 6% were between the ages of 13 to 17, with the biggest demographic being those between the ages of 45 and 54, the generation that grew up watching these characters. That skew suggests the nostalgia pull is real, but the younger moviegoing crowd the film needs to launch a franchise has not yet been converted.
None of that appears to have dampened enthusiasm for Mendes personally. Reviewers have singled out her performance as a standout, with one outlet noting that the film absolutely would not be the same if the role was in the hands of any other actress. That kind of praise matters in a crowded summer marketplace where audience word-of-mouth can shift a film’s trajectory in its second and third weekends.
Mendes herself has been candid about what the role represents for her career. In an interview with Who What Wear, she discussed being in the middle of one of the biggest years of her career so far, with three separate upcoming projects in the first half of the year, a cofounded production company that just released its second feature film, and a major summer blockbuster all arriving in close succession.

The film itself has a stacked ensemble working alongside her. Nicholas Galitzine stars as Prince Adam and He-Man, Jared Leto plays Skeletor, Idris Elba takes on Duncan and Man-at-Arms, and Alison Brie plays Evil-Lyn, all under the direction of Travis Knight. The cast also includes Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress and James Purefoy and Charlotte Riley as Adam’s parents, King Randor and Queen Marlena. It is one of the more ambitious ensemble builds attempted for a fantasy franchise in recent years, and the talent assembled clearly believed in the material enough to commit.
The film premiered in theaters on June 5, and a post-credits scene has already sparked considerable online discussion, strongly suggesting that the origin of She-Ra, Prince Adam’s long-lost twin sister, will be fully explored in a potential sequel. Whether that sequel gets made will depend heavily on how the film performs in the coming weeks, but the creative foundation for continued storytelling appears to be in place.
For Mendes, the Teela chapter feels like a genuine inflection point regardless of where the box office ultimately lands. She arrived on set, delivered the performance, wore the costume with conviction, and now she is sharing it all on Instagram with the ease of someone who knows she held her own. That selfie is not just a movie promo. It is a statement.
