Every Magnolia Is Back, and They’re Taking Manhattan – The Full ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 5 Cast Revealed
Netflix’s beloved Southern comfort drama is heading somewhere no mason jar margarita has ever traveled before. ‘Sweet Magnolias’ is back for a fifth season, and the show is trading the front porches of Serenity, South Carolina for the skyline of New York City. The lifelong best friends will tackle new adventures from South Carolina to New York City and beyond when the season premieres on June 11.
The fan community has been fizzing with anticipation ever since the Season 4 finale left storylines dangling like wind chimes in a Southern storm. Netflix confirmed the renewal on April 23, 2025, and the new season will consist of 10 episodes. Now, with the premiere almost here, the full cast picture has snapped into focus and it is well worth breaking down.
The Core Trio Returns to Lead the ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 5 Cast
The heart of the show has never wavered, and that holds true for the new season. JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Maddie, Heather Headley as Helen, and Brooke Elliott as Dana Sue all return as series regulars. These three anchors have carried the show through every twist since it first premiered, and their dynamic remains the emotional engine of everything that happens in Serenity and now beyond.
In Season 5, Maddie is accepting the offer of her dream job, which requires her to move to New York City, marking a huge change in the arc of the show. The first official images from the season confirmed the Manhattan setting immediately, showing the trio very much together and very much far from home.
Showrunner and executive producer Sheryl J. Anderson told Netflix Tudum, “We are thrilled to let the Magnolias take Manhattan. Not only is this adventure huge fun, it’s also an opportunity to explore the facets of their relationships in a new context.”
Garcia Swisher teased during an interview that Season 5 will have the most romance of any season so far, saying fans are going to get those butterflies again for the first time in a really long time. She also reassured viewers that the tone is shifting toward hope rather than heartbreak, confirming that unlike the devastating loss in Season 4, no one dies in Season 5, after Season 4 featured the surprising death of Maddie’s ex-husband, Bill, played by Chris Klein.
Familiar Faces and Returning Supporting Cast
Beyond the central three, a wide range of beloved supporting players are coming back to fill out the world of Serenity. Supporting cast includes Justin Bruening as Cal, Dion Johnstone as Erik, Brandon Quinn as Ronnie, Anneliese Judge as Annie, Logan Allen as Kyle, and Jamie Lynn Spears as Noreen. Each of these characters left Season 4 at a meaningful crossroads, and Season 5 clearly has a full plate of unfinished business to work through.

Season 4 ended with Helen and Erik basking in the bliss of their post-engagement glow, while Dana Sue and Ronnie took the first steps toward exploring a new business opportunity. The Season 5 trailer shows Helen going wedding dress shopping but fearing her happy ending may be too good to be true, asking her friends, “Is something going to go wrong?”
Dana Sue appears worried about the fragile state of her marriage to Ronnie, while Chris Medlin returns as Isaac, who has a new love interest this season. The younger generation also gets its share of screen time, with the ongoing emotional threads between the Mini Magnolias carrying real weight into the new episodes.
New Cast Members Bringing Fresh Energy to Season 5
The new additions are where things get particularly exciting for longtime fans. Jamie-Lynn Sigler plays Nell Winters, a prominent writer whom Maddie befriends in New York, while Janice Wesley joins as Miss Eustice, a town matron of Serenity. Sigler is perhaps best known for her run on ‘The Sopranos’, and her casting brings a recognizable face to the show’s new Manhattan chapter.
Courtney Grace plays Courtney Sinclair, Ronnie’s new hard-charging business partner, and John Gabriel Rodriquez plays Clark Bellson, a rival business owner in Serenity who complicates life for the Magnolias.
Iman Benson joins as Jessica Whitley, Erik’s niece, who arrives with unexpected news for Erik and Helen, while Aidan Merwarth steps into the role of Noah Wharton, the Whartons’ grandson, and Austin Woods plays Blake Monaghan, both of whom add new complications for the Mini Magnolias.
Garcia Swisher noted that there are some fresh faces joining the cast in really unique and fun ways, and that the Magnolias are seeing new possibilities on the horizon that are going to only expand the show’s world. That sense of expansion feels very intentional, and the new characters span both the Serenity storylines and the New York threads seamlessly.
Behind the Camera, the Stars Step into Directing Roles
One of the most buzzed-about developments for Season 5 is not just who is in front of the camera but who is stepping behind it. Brooke Elliott and JoAnna Garcia Swisher will both direct episodes in Season 5. This marks the directorial debut for Elliott, who is set to direct episode 4, while Swisher returns to direct episodes 5 and 6.
Production officially wrapped in late September 2025, with filming primarily taking place in its historic home of Covington, Georgia. Savannah, Georgia also figures into the plot of Season 5, giving the season a broader geographic palette than any previous installment. The fact that the leads are now shaping the show from the director’s chair adds another layer of creative investment that fans will certainly feel on screen.
With a cast this deep, storylines stretching from small-town South Carolina to the streets of New York, and two of the show’s leading ladies calling the shots from behind the camera, ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 5 is shaping up to be the most ambitious chapter yet.
