Liu Kang vs. Shang-Chi: ‘Mortal Kombat II’ Star Ludi Lin Has Some Thoughts on That Dream Fight
There are certain hypothetical matchups that fans of action cinema have debated for years without resolution, and the Liu Kang versus Shang-Chi conversation sits near the top of that list.
Both are legendary martial arts warriors from rival universes. One is the God of Fire and champion of Earthrealm. The other wields ten ancient rings of immeasurable power. Pit them against each other and something genuinely interesting happens, at least according to the man currently playing one of them.
‘Mortal Kombat II’ arrived in theaters on May 8 under director Simon McQuoid’s returning hand, bringing Liu Kang back to the big screen alongside a stacked ensemble that includes Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jessica McNamee, and new additions Tati Gabrielle and Adeline Rudolph.
The sequel was shifted from an October 2025 release to May 8 to position it as a summer blockbuster, and carries an estimated production budget of $80 million. The film opened to a $40 million domestic debut, a number that looks considerably stronger in context given that the original ‘Mortal Kombat’ made just $84 million worldwide, largely due to the pandemic and Warner Bros.’ decision that year to release all its theatrical titles simultaneously on HBO Max.
In the middle of the press run surrounding that release, Ludi Lin was asked the question fans have clearly been dying to pose: who would win in a fight between Liu Kang and Shang-Chi?
His answer, captured in a clip circulating widely online, was self-aware and entertainingly diplomatic. “He’s got all 10 rings, right? And I think those powers haven’t been fully explored yet, right? So, I don’t know what else he’s got,” Lin said in the interview. It is the kind of answer that refuses to definitively crown either fighter while acknowledging exactly what makes Shang-Chi’s arsenal so difficult to argue against.
The debate matters in part because both characters occupy the same lane of Asian-led action cinema, and both franchises have staked out significant cultural territory. Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi became a touchstone for Asian representation in blockbuster filmmaking when his ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ earned $432.2 million worldwide. Lin’s Liu Kang carries similar weight as one of the most iconic Asian characters in gaming history, and his portrayal across both ‘Mortal Kombat’ films has been a consistent highlight.
Lin himself has spoken openly about Asian representation as a driver of his commitment to the role, describing playing Liu Kang as a career milestone as a Chinese-Canadian actor in Hollywood. He has also made clear that the character is still evolving. Speaking to Variety, Lin described Liu Kang in the sequel as being in a darker, more complex emotional place: “He just steps more into his power. It’s the next step in his evolution.”

Hype Malaysia’s interview with Lin revealed further depth behind that evolution. “For anyone who knows that kind of grief, it’s a very heavy place,” Lin said. “So definitely, he has a lot of grief inside him at the start of the second movie. A lot of fury, anger, and complex emotions.”
That internal arc gives the Liu Kang versus Shang-Chi debate a particular texture. Shang-Chi’s rings may be powerful and, as Lin himself notes, their full capabilities remain unexplored. But Liu Kang is a god of fire who is actively deepening his power with each outing. Lin has compared the arc to a Dragon Ball-style Super Saiyan upgrade, framing the character’s journey as one of continuous escalation.
On the physical side, Lin committed seriously to the role, growing out his hair for real this time after wearing a wig in the first film, and building significant muscle to stand alongside co-stars who cut imposing figures. He and Max Huang, who plays Kung Lao, put particular work into their fight sequence together, with Lin saying “we put a lot of work into that fight, and we’re both really proud of what we accomplished.”
The crossover debate will likely never have an official answer, but Lin’s response captures something true about both characters. The Ten Rings are formidable and largely unmapped. And Liu Kang, as Lin plays him, is a warrior whose ceiling has not yet been reached.
