Mortal Kombat (Franchise)
Mortal Kombat began in 1992 as an arcade fighting game created by Midway Games. It quickly grew into a major franchise with films, TV shows, comics, and more, becoming one of the best-selling fighting game series ever with over 100 million copies sold.
The series is known for its intense violence and “fatalities,” which helped spark controversy and led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board rating system. After Midway closed, the franchise was taken over by Warner Bros. Entertainment and is now developed by NetherRealm Studios.
