The first ten minutes of Mortal Kombat II have now officially been released online, giving fans an early look at the upcoming sequel just ahead of its digital launch tomorrow.

The film is the follow-up to the 2021 reboot and continues the story based on the long-running video game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. It is the fourth film in the overall Mortal Kombat movie series and expands the universe introduced in the previous installment.

Directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater, the movie brings back several familiar characters while also introducing new ones. The returning cast includes Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Max Huang, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. New additions to the franchise include Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Martyn Ford, and Tati Gabrielle.

The story centers on Johnny Cage, a Hollywood martial arts actor who is suddenly pulled into a much larger conflict. He is recruited by Raiden and Sonya Blade to join Earthrealm’s fighters in a dangerous interdimensional tournament. Their mission is to stop the forces of Outworld and prevent Emperor Shao Kahn from taking control. Along the way, they are also supported by Kitana, the princess of Edenia.

Mortal Kombat II first premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre on April 27, before being released in cinemas on May 8. The film is now moving into its digital release phase, with availability starting tomorrow.

Production on the sequel began in June 2023 in Australia. Filming was briefly paused due to the SAG-AFTRA strike before resuming later that year and wrapping in early 2024. Despite the delays, the project was completed and moved through post-production for its scheduled release.

According to box office reports, the film has earned around 128 million dollars worldwide on a production budget of 80 million dollars. While critics have given it mixed reactions overall, it has been considered an improvement over the first film by some reviewers, particularly in terms of action sequences and character development.

The decision to release the opening ten minutes ahead of the digital launch appears aimed at building additional interest and giving audiences a preview of the tone and style of the sequel. The early footage is expected to set the stage for Johnny Cage’s introduction and the larger conflict between Earthrealm and Outworld.

The franchise itself has continued to evolve since the original 2021 reboot, with discussions already taking place about future spin-offs and character-focused projects. Producers have previously suggested that standalone stories could be developed around popular fighters from the series.

With the digital release arriving tomorrow, fans will soon be able to watch the full version of Mortal Kombat II at home. The early release of the opening sequence has only increased anticipation for the next chapter in the long-running martial arts saga.
