Barbie Almost Played a Big Role in ‘Toy Story 1’ — Here’s Why She Was Cut From the Film

According to David A. Price’s book The Pixar Touch: The Making of a Company, Barbie was once planned to have a much bigger role in the original “Toy Story” movie before being removed during development.

The early versions of “Toy Story” at Pixar included Barbie as a key character. At one point in the script, she was even written as a heroic figure who would help rescue Woody and Buzz Lightyear from the neighbor’s house. In this version, Barbie would arrive in her signature pink car and act as a strong action-style toy, similar to characters like Ripley from “Alien” and Sarah Connor from “Terminator.”

However, this plan never made it to the final film. The main reason was that Mattel, the company that owns Barbie, did not agree to license the character for the movie. As explained in The Pixar Touch, the toy company had concerns about how the film might perform. At the time, “Toy Story” was still an unproven project, and there was a real chance it could fail. Mattel did not want Barbie to be part of a movie that might damage her image if it flopped.

There was also another concern. Mattel wanted Barbie to stay a flexible character in the minds of children. They preferred that kids imagine their own version of Barbie when playing, instead of associating her with a fixed personality from a movie. Because of this, they chose not to give Pixar the rights.

With Barbie removed from the story, Pixar had to adjust the script and redistribute her planned role. Many of her scenes and ideas were eventually reshaped into a new character, Bo Peep. Bo Peep became a softer but still important presence in Woody’s world, and she remained part of the franchise for later films.

Before she was cut, Barbie’s role was actually written in a very bold way. The plan showed her as a confident, action-driven toy who could take charge in dangerous situations. The idea was to make her stand out as a strong female hero within the toy world. Writers even included references that compared her to famous action heroes from major films, which shows how different her early version was compared to how she is usually seen.

But during rewrites, Pixar also realized that including Barbie in such a major rescue role could take attention away from Woody’s character arc. The story needed space for Woody and Buzz to grow and develop on their own without a powerful outside character solving their problems too easily.

In the end, Barbie did not appear in the original “Toy Story,” but she was not completely erased from the franchise. After the success of the first and second films, Mattel eventually agreed to include her in later installments. She finally appeared in “Toy Story 3,” where she became a supporting character and part of the larger toy world.

Looking back, Barbie’s absence in the first film helped shape the story we know today. It allowed Pixar to focus on original characters and build emotional depth without relying on licensed toys. Still, her near-inclusion remains one of the most interesting “what if” moments in Pixar history.
