Few sci-fi franchises have the kind of visual iconography that makes your jaw drop at the mere thought of it translated into plastic bricks.

The world of Arrakis, with its vast golden dunes and terrifying creatures lurking beneath the surface, is one of them. And right now, the LEGO community is buzzing over a major leak that suggests the most beloved monster of Frank Herbert’s universe is finally getting its brick-built moment.

Reliable LEGO leaker Brick Tap, operating through verified anonymous sources, has surfaced details on an upcoming LEGO Icons set that would bring Shai-Hulud itself to your shelf.

Set number 11392, dubbed simply Sandworm, is reported as a 1,837-piece brick-built recreation of the gigantic worm-like creatures that burrow through the desert planet of Arrakis, creatures also responsible for creating the valuable spice known as melange.

Priced at $140 and reportedly targeting a January 1 release, the set lands at a notably better value than the existing LEGO Dune Ornithopter, which launched at $165 for just 1,369 pieces, meaning the Sandworm offers significantly more pieces per dollar by comparison. For fans who felt the Ornithopter was a steep ask, this new figure will likely feel like a welcome surprise.

While a New Year’s Day release might seem unusual at first glance, it is actually standard practice for LEGO and effectively a tradition at this point, with January 1 tending to be one of the company’s busiest days of the year when it comes to new releases. So the timing, at least, is entirely on brand for the company.

What makes this leak feel especially well-timed is what is happening on the cinematic side of the ‘Dune’ universe. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is set to release on December 18, marking the conclusion of Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy, and is set 17 years after the events of ‘Part Two’. The film is based on Frank Herbert’s novel ‘Dune Messiah’ and reunites Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Robert Pattinson, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Rebecca Ferguson. A Sandworm set dropping at the very start of the new year, just weeks after the film’s theatrical bow, is the kind of commercial synergy that practically writes itself.

The LEGO Group first entered the ‘Dune’ universe when it unveiled its inaugural set on October 24, 2023, with a release the following February. That first offering was the LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter, aimed at an 18+ audience. The set featured a full 31-inch wingspan, deployable landing gear, and an opening cockpit, along with eight minifigures spanning key characters from the film. It was a bold debut that proved the franchise had real potential in brick form, and fans responded enthusiastically.

The Sandworm would represent a meaningful expansion of that line, moving away from vehicles and into the creature design territory that truly defines Arrakis. No word has surfaced yet on whether the set will include minifigures, such as a Paul Atreides figure that could be posed atop the creature, which is one of the most iconic images from the films. That detail alone could make or break the set for many collectors.

It is worth noting that as of now, none of this is official. LEGO has not confirmed either the Sandworm set or its companion leak, a 2,017-piece Lord of the Rings Oliphaunt diorama that was surfaced alongside it by Brick Tap’s sources. Leaks from this particular source have earned a reputation for reliability within the LEGO community, but nothing is guaranteed until the company makes an official announcement.

Given that ‘Dune: Part Three’ is still in active development, the timing should line up well commercially for LEGO, with the set arriving just as the trilogy reaches its dramatic conclusion and audience interest is at its peak.

Whether or not every detail in the leak proves accurate, the appetite for a Sandworm set has been there since the Ornithopter first launched, and there is little doubt this news will keep that hunger alive for the months ahead.
