Does ‘Disclosure Day’ Have a Post-Credits Scene? Here’s What You Need to Know
Steven Spielberg has never been a director who needs to sell audiences on a sequel before the credits are done rolling. With ‘Disclosure Day’ hitting US theaters today, June 12, the question on every moviegoer’s lips has been a familiar one: do I have to sit through the credits? The answer, refreshingly, is no.
‘Disclosure Day’ does not feature any mid- or post-credits scene, meaning fans are free to leave their seats as soon as the credits begin rolling. In a blockbuster landscape where teaser stingers have become practically mandatory, that choice feels almost radical.
The film marks Spielberg’s grand return to the extraterrestrial genre he helped define. There hasn’t been a “film by Steven Spielberg” since 2022’s ‘The Fabelmans,’ and with ‘Disclosure Day,’ the director returns to familiar UFO territory in alignment with prior classics like ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind,’ ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,’ and ‘War of the Worlds.’ The anticipation surrounding this one has been considerable, to put it mildly.
The film follows a cybersecurity expert who finds himself targeted by a major corporation after he becomes a whistleblower to expose secrets about extraterrestrial intelligence, and he teams up with a meteorologist who begins to experience strange occurrences to prove the existence of alien life. It is the kind of premise Spielberg has always excelled at, blending wide-eyed wonder with real-world paranoia.
Critic Brian Tallerico at RogerEbert.com praised the film as one that reminds viewers that blockbusters can be morally and thematically complex while still being thoroughly entertaining, though he noted that David Koepp’s script occasionally trips over itself trying to explain everything. That complexity is precisely what makes the absence of a post-credits scene feel like such a deliberate and earned creative decision.

Rather than providing a clear-cut resolution, Spielberg trusts ambiguity to pique curiosity and invites viewers to draw their own conclusions. The film’s final moments prioritize emotion and wonder over sequel setup, much like the conclusions of other alien films by Spielberg such as ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ and ‘E.T.’
The absence of a post-credits sequence also reinforces the film’s standalone nature. While many contemporary science-fiction movies build interconnected franchises, ‘Disclosure Day’ tells a complete story that reaches its climax as the credits begin. For Spielberg, the ending itself is the final statement.
That said, a door is not entirely closed. The film’s conclusion does leave a few unanswered questions that could serve as great foundations for a second installment, including how the world will adapt to the disclosure at the center of the story and what the alien actually says to Daniel. Those lingering threads have already sent fan communities into a frenzy of speculation online.
The reviews have been overwhelmingly warm. Early critics praised ‘Disclosure Day’ as Spielberg’s best movie in years, with Emily Blunt also singled out for delivering one of the best performances of her career as a meteorologist drawn into a government conspiracy to hide evidence of extraterrestrial contact.
Looper called it a triumph, describing Spielberg as an unparalleled visionary operating at the top of his game, adding that the film takes genuine cues from recent sci-fi hits like ‘Arrival’ and the 2026 box office success ‘Project Hail Mary.’
Even the soundtrack has drawn its own wave of admiration. While there may be no post-credits scene, audiences do get to hear John Williams’ score build to a moving crescendo throughout the credits, making it worth staying seated for at least a few minutes.
The director has made clear that this project carries genuine personal weight. During an interview in March, Spielberg shared his thoughts on whether aliens exist in real life, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “Don’t know any more than any of you do, but I have a very strong suspicion that we are not alone here on Earth right now, and I made a movie about that.”
His lead star has been equally enthusiastic about the experience. Josh O’Connor spoke about working with Spielberg on the subject matter, saying, “If there was a researcher you’d want to employ, it’d be Steven Spielberg. On this subject, he’s incredible.”
‘Disclosure Day’ is in theaters now, and it is the kind of film that will have you sitting in silence long after the lights come up, turning the ending over in your mind without any extra scene needed to do the work. Let us know in the comments what you thought of the film’s ending and whether you think a sequel is warranted.
