‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’: Tom Holland Reveals What He’s Most Proud Of
Spider-Man is swinging back onto the big screen next year, but according to Tom Holland, the most important part of the new movie is not the action or the villains. It is the message at the heart of the story.
The actor recently spoke about Spider-Man: Brand New Day and revealed that the film’s deeper theme is what makes him most proud. Holland explained that the movie focuses on an issue that affects many young people today, especially in a world dominated by social media and constant screen time.
“The message is so important for young people in this digital age,” Holland said. “It’s so easy to sit at home of an evening and just scroll through your phone and just turn your mind to mush and to forget about how important socializing is.”
His comments suggest that Brand New Day will explore more than just superhero battles. The film appears set to examine loneliness, human connection, and the importance of real-world relationships, themes that fit naturally with Peter Parker’s latest chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day follows the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Doctor Strange’s spell erased Peter Parker from everyone’s memory. As a result, Peter now lives completely alone, with no friends, family members, or former allies remembering who he is.
The new movie takes place four years after those events. Peter continues protecting New York City as Spider-Man while trying to build a life for himself in secret. At the same time, he faces a dangerous new threat and begins dealing with unexpected changes to his powers.
The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The screenplay was written by longtime Spider-Man writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, with additional work from Justin Kuritzkes.
The creative team wanted to present a different version of Peter Parker. After years of fighting alongside the Avengers and dealing with multiverse threats, this film returns the character to his roots.
The goal was to show what many fans consider a classic Spider-Man story, with Peter operating on his own, protecting neighborhoods across New York City, and dealing with everyday challenges while balancing his superhero responsibilities.
Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya and Jacob Batalon. The cast also includes Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. Bernthal will reprise his role as Frank Castle, better known as the Punisher, while Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner, also known as the Hulk.
Development on the movie has been ongoing for several years. Producer Amy Pascal first confirmed plans for another Spider-Man trilogy shortly after No Way Home was released in 2021. Holland became more involved in shaping the story than he had been on previous installments, helping guide the direction of Peter’s next chapter.
The title Brand New Day is inspired by the Marvel Comics storyline of the same name, which introduced a fresh start for Spider-Man after a major change in his life. That idea appears to carry over into the movie, as Peter begins rebuilding his world from scratch.
According to Holland, however, the film’s strongest element is not the reset itself but the reminder that real human connections still matter. In an age when many people spend more time online than face-to-face, that message could end up being one of the most relatable parts of Spider-Man’s newest adventure.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 31.
