Amanda Seyfried Breaks Silence on ‘The Housemaid’ Co-Star Sydney Sweeney’s Media Controversies
Amanda Seyfried has finally shared her thoughts on the controversy that surrounded her The Housemaid co-star Sydney Sweeney. Nearly a year after the actress faced online criticism over her American Eagle jeans campaign, Seyfried explained that she understood how difficult the situation must have been for Sweeney.
In a recent interview with GQ, Seyfried reflected on the time when she and Sweeney were promoting The Housemaid while the controversy was still a major topic online. The Mean Girls actress said she wanted to support her co-star but also did not want to make the situation harder for her.
“We had a great time on the press tour,” Seyfried said while speaking about their work together. “We worked really hard and she seemed to be having fun, but I also understood that probably it can’t be f—ing easy, where she found herself… I have heard her stand up for herself, but I think she found herself between a rock and a hard place.”
Seyfried explained that her way of supporting Sweeney was not by constantly bringing up the controversy. Instead, she focused on creating a positive environment during their interviews and appearances.
The actress said she avoided discussing the issue unless Sweeney wanted to talk about it because she did not want to become “a source of anything.” Seyfried also praised her co-star personally, revealing that Sweeney surprised her with a birthday cake and gave her a special bracelet.
While Seyfried showed understanding toward Sweeney, she also admitted that she stayed focused on promoting The Housemaid during that period. The two actresses continued their press tour and worked to keep attention on the movie rather than the online debate.
The controversy began in July 2025 when American Eagle released a denim campaign featuring Sweeney. The advertisement used the phrase “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” which quickly became a subject of discussion on social media.
Some critics argued that the slogan sounded similar to the phrase “great genes” and believed it could be interpreted as a reference to genetics and traditional beauty standards. Others felt the campaign was simply a wordplay about denim and did not have a deeper meaning.
The reaction became one of the biggest celebrity advertising debates of the year, with people online sharing different opinions about the campaign and what it represented.
Sweeney later addressed the situation herself in a November 2025 interview with GQ. The actress explained that the response was unexpected and said the advertisement was only meant to be about clothing.
“I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life,” Sweeney said.
The Euphoria star also defended her involvement in the campaign and said she never intended for the advertisement to create controversy.
For Seyfried, the experience was more about supporting a younger co-star during a difficult public moment. Her comments show that behind the headlines and online debates, there was also a working relationship between two actresses trying to navigate a challenging time while promoting their film.
