Can a Show Be This Scary and This Funny? The ‘Widow’s Bay’ Cast Explains How
Widow’s Bay became one of the biggest surprise hits of the season, slowly building an audience after its quiet debut on Apple TV+. The horror-comedy series did not explode overnight, but strong word of mouth helped it gain attention as viewers discovered its unusual mix of creepy stories, small-town mystery, and dry humor.
The show’s success is largely connected to creator Katie Dippold, who brought her comedy background from Parks and Recreation into a much darker world. While Dippold had already worked on popular comedy projects, Widow’s Bay allowed her to combine jokes with real horror elements instead of making a simple parody.
In an interview with Rachel Leishman, Dippold explained that finding the right balance between comedy and fear was one of the hardest parts of making the series.
“It’s very fun, but to be honest, it’s also very challenging because there are so many jokes and moments in the writer’s room that came up that would make me laugh so hard, but then we couldn’t use it because you have to be very careful to not undercut the stakes in the tension in the story.”
The creator said she wanted the supernatural parts of the story to feel serious because she is a horror fan herself. According to Dippold, the goal was never to make fun of the genre, but to create a world where the scary moments and funny moments could exist together.
“As a horror fan, I want to know that it’s being taken seriously, or I wouldn’t watch it if it just felt like it was going to be a parody,” she explained.
That approach is also something the cast noticed while working on the show. Stars Matthew Rhys, Stephen Root, and Kate O’Flynn praised Dippold’s writing and the way the humor comes naturally from the characters.
Root credited the series’ tone directly to the creator, saying, “That’s Katie Dippold’s, with her fantastic scripts.”
Rhys added that the show works because the characters feel real first, with the comedy and horror coming naturally from their situations.
“She created such a real world and real characters and the comedy and the horror to an extent came from those character-driven situations,” Rhys said.

The story follows Tom Loftis, played by Rhys, a mayor living in the strange coastal town of Widow’s Bay. Unlike most seaside communities, this town has a dark secret. The island is believed to be cursed, and supernatural creatures regularly appear to cause trouble.
Tom is not originally from the island and does not fully believe the old stories. However, his assistant Patricia Moyer, played by O’Flynn, and local resident Wyck Crawford, played by Root, begin pushing him to accept that something unusual is happening.
As strange events continue, Tom is forced to question everything he knows about the town and its history. The series mixes classic horror ideas with small-town comedy, creating a story where a monster problem can happen right alongside everyday personal drama.
Dippold’s long journey with Widow’s Bay also played a major role in shaping the final version of the show. The idea existed for years before becoming a television series, and the creator said waiting helped her develop a stronger story.
The first season has now finished, and a second season is already planned. After starting as a quiet release, Widow’s Bay has turned into one of the most talked-about new shows, proving that a strange mix of horror and comedy can work when the characters and story come first.
