Anya Taylor-Joy Reveals She Spent 6 Months Fighting for Furiosa’s Revenge Against Dementus
Anya Taylor-Joy has opened up about the difficult experience of making Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, revealing that she spent months fighting for the ending she believed the character deserved.
In an interview featured by The Hollywood Reporter, Taylor-Joy discussed her time working with director George Miller on the Mad Max prequel. While she praised the filmmaker and understood his vision, she admitted that filming the movie pushed her in ways she did not expect, especially when it came to how Furiosa should handle her revenge against Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth.
One of Miller’s biggest goals was creating a powerful and controlled version of Furiosa. Taylor-Joy explained that the director wanted her character to have a very specific presence on screen.
For six months during production, Miller repeatedly gave her the same instructions: don’t breathe, keep your mouth closed, and show very little emotion. He wanted Furiosa to feel like a legendary figure rather than a typical action hero.
For Taylor-Joy, that was a major challenge because she is naturally an actor who uses movement and emotion to build a character.
The biggest disagreement came when Taylor-Joy thought about Furiosa’s final confrontation with Dementus. She felt the character needed more than simply defeating him. She wanted Furiosa to be the person who personally decided what happened to him.
According to Taylor-Joy, she spent much of the production trying to convince Miller that Furiosa’s revenge needed to reflect everything she had suffered. “I just advocated and advocated and advocated for her to live up to her name,” Taylor-Joy said. She described that battle as the biggest challenge she faced during the movie. “That was my mountain on that movie, and I got it, but it was hard, hard won,” she explained.

In the final version of Furiosa, the character does not give Dementus a quick or simple death. Instead, she captures him, brings him back to the Citadel, and turns his downfall into a symbolic moment connected to her own past.
Taylor-Joy said she understood what George Miller was trying to achieve with the character, even if she had a different idea about how Furiosa’s story should end.
“It’s a very difficult conversation to have,” she said, adding that being completely honest about every part of her experience could hurt others. However, she also made it clear that she was happy she continued fighting for the ending she believed was right.
The actress explained that Furiosa was a dream role for her long before she joined the film. She was already a fan of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road and saw Furiosa as a powerful character who represented strength and survival.
“This was my dream. It was my dream to be in these Mad Max movies and as this crazy feminist icon,” Taylor-Joy said.
The experience of making the movie was not easy, but Taylor-Joy believes it changed her as an actor. She entered the production knowing it would be a major challenge and left with a deeper understanding of the character and the filmmaking process.
While Furiosa did not become the box office success some expected, Taylor-Joy’s performance was widely praised. Her comments show how much personal effort went into creating a younger version of one of the most respected characters in the Mad Max universe.
For Taylor-Joy, the fight over Furiosa’s ending was about more than one scene. It was about making sure the character had control over her own story.
