Emilia Clarke’s Acclaimed TV Series With 94% Rotten Tomatoes Score Canceled After Just One Season
Emilia Clarke’s latest television project has come to an unexpected end. Peacock has officially canceled the Cold War spy thriller ‘Ponies’ after only one season, despite the series earning strong reviews from critics and praise for the performances of its two leads.
The series arrived on Peacock with all eight episodes released on January 15. Created as a mix of espionage drama, mystery, and character-driven storytelling, ‘Ponies’ followed two women who found themselves pulled into the dangerous world of intelligence after a personal tragedy changed their lives forever.
Set in Moscow in 1977, the show focused on Bea and Twila, two American Embassy secretaries who were considered “persons of no interest” by intelligence agencies. Their lives changed after their husbands died under mysterious circumstances, leading them to become CIA operatives searching for the truth behind the events.
Emilia Clarke played Bea, a highly educated Russian-speaking woman with a background connected to Soviet immigrants, while Haley Lu Richardson starred as Twila, a fearless small-town woman with a very different personality. Their unlikely partnership became the center of the series.
According to Variety, the cancellation comes despite the show receiving mostly positive reactions from critics. The series earned a 94% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers praising its performances, story, and the chemistry between Clarke and Richardson.
Rotten Tomatoes later listed the series with a 96% approval score based on 28 critic reviews. The critics’ consensus described ‘Ponies’ as a story that combines friendship and espionage, saying it “gradually achieves full gallop thanks to Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson’s tag-team charisma.”
However, strong reviews were not enough to secure a second season. Peacock does not usually share detailed viewing numbers for its shows, making it difficult to measure the series’ performance. Variety reported that ‘Ponies’ did not appear on Nielsen’s streaming top 10 charts after its release, which likely played a role in the decision.

The show featured a large supporting cast that included Adrian Lester, Artjom Gilz, Nicholas Podany, Petro Ninovskyi, and Vic Michaelis. Behind the scenes, ‘Ponies’ was created by David Iserson and Susanna Fogel, with Iserson also working as co-showrunner and Fogel directing several episodes.
The series was produced by Universal Television and featured several experienced producers, including Mike Daniels, Jessica Rhoades, and Emilia Clarke herself as an executive producer. The creative team built the show around the idea of two very different women becoming unlikely partners during one of the most tense periods of the Cold War.
For Clarke, the role offered another chance to show a different side of her acting range after becoming globally known for playing Daenerys Targaryen in ‘Game of Thrones’. Richardson also received attention for bringing a different energy to the role after her performances in projects like ‘The White Lotus’.
Critics highlighted the relationship between the two actresses as one of the biggest strengths of the show. Variety praised their connection, calling their chemistry the “glue that binds the whole enterprise together.” Other reviews also noted that the series allowed both actors to move beyond the types of characters audiences already associated with them.
While ‘Ponies’ will not continue, the show leaves behind a strong critical response and a memorable pairing between Clarke and Richardson. For fans who enjoyed the eight-episode spy story, the first season now stands as the complete journey of Bea and Twila’s dangerous mission.
