DC fans have finally gotten their first look at Batman: Knightfall, and the early reactions suggest that Warner Bros. Animation may have a major hit on its hands. The animated movie premiered at the 2026 Annecy Animation Festival, where it received loud applause from the audience after bringing one of Batman’s most famous comic storylines to life.

Batman: Knightfall is the first part of a planned animated trilogy based on the classic 1990s DC Comics storyline. The original Knightfall arc is best known for introducing Bane as one of Batman’s greatest threats. In the comics, Bane famously defeats Batman by breaking his back, forcing Bruce Wayne to step away from the role of the Dark Knight.

The storyline later inspired parts of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, but this new animated version aims to explore the full story in a much bigger way. During the Annecy presentation, Warner Bros. Animation executive vice president Peter Girardi explained why the project needed multiple films.

“You all know this is a very important story in the Batman mythology,” Girardi told the crowd. “It is so big and it was so consequential to the Batman story that it takes place over three films. So this is a trilogy of films. All animated.”

The first movie, titled Batman: Knightfall – Part 1, focuses on Bane’s plan to destroy Gotham and break Batman both physically and mentally. The film features Anson Mount as Batman, Michael Mando as Bane, and Pablo Schreiber as Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael.

The movie is directed by Jeff Wamester from a script by Jeremy Adams. Animation is being handled by Studio Mir, the South Korean studio known for projects including The Legend of Korra, X-Men ’97, My Adventures With Superman, and Young Justice: Outsiders.

According to Variety, the Annecy audience reacted strongly to the movie’s darker tone, intense action, and the larger role given to Tim Drake, the third Robin. Unlike many previous Batman adaptations, this film gives Tim a major spotlight and explores his relationship with Bruce Wayne.

One of the biggest surprises from the early reactions is how important Tim Drake is to the story. The character has not received much attention in live-action or animated Batman projects compared to other Robins like Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. In Knightfall, Tim is shown as a smart young detective who understands Batman’s struggles and wants to help him.

The movie also presents a different version of Batman. This Bruce Wayne is exhausted, isolated, and struggling after the death of Jason Todd. His refusal to accept help becomes one of the main weaknesses that Bane uses against him.

The film also introduces a much darker version of Bane. Instead of focusing only on his physical strength, this version highlights his intelligence and ability to manipulate events. He is presented as a dangerous enemy who can challenge Batman both mentally and physically.

The first part of the trilogy also embraces a more mature style, with violent action and a much darker look at Gotham City. Warner Bros. Animation has previously released adult DC animated films, but Knightfall appears to be pushing that style even further.

Before the screening began, Girardi praised the project, saying, “We’ve done a lot of DC animated films based on the published material. This is one of the best.”

While fans will have to wait for the full release to judge the movie themselves, the first reactions from Annecy show strong excitement. If the response continues, Batman: Knightfall could become one of DC’s biggest animated projects yet.
