Amy Adams is proving that sometimes a role you play on screen can come in handy in real life. During an appearance on the SmartLess podcast, the Oscar-nominated actress revealed that she once used medical skills she learned while filming the short-lived CBS drama Dr. Vegas to help save the life of a stabbing victim.

Adams said the frightening moment happened as she and her family were leaving one of their favorite restaurants in Santa Monica. They suddenly noticed people nearby screaming and realized someone had been seriously injured.

“These people were screaming and a guy was walking and they were yelling, ‘He’s dying!’ And my husband’s like, ‘That’s blood!’” Adams recalled.

The actress said she and her family were among the first people to reach the scene. Her husband, Darren Le Gallo, stayed with their daughter while Adams and her father rushed over to help the injured man.

The victim had suffered a stab wound to the neck and was losing blood. Adams said she immediately focused on what needed to be done instead of panicking. She grabbed beach towels and used them to apply pressure to the wound while waiting for help.

“He was bleeding and his friends were freaking out,” Adams said. She explained that one of the things she remembered from her acting experience was how to keep someone calm during a medical emergency. While filming Dr. Vegas, Adams played registered nurse Alice Doherty, a role that required her to learn basic medical procedures and how to act in hospital situations.

During the emergency, Adams told the injured man to stay still and avoid moving too much.

“The more you struggle, the faster you’re going to bleed. Just lay down,” she told him.

Dr. Vegas was a CBS medical drama that premiered in 2004 but was canceled after only five episodes. The series starred Rob Lowe as Dr. Billy Grant, a young doctor who works at an old-fashioned Las Vegas resort and casino. The show mixed medical cases with the unusual setting of a casino environment, following Billy as he treated patients while dealing with life in Las Vegas.

Along with Adams and Lowe, the cast included Sarah Lancaster, Lisa Gabriel, Joe Pantoliano, Tom Sizemore and Adam Clark. Although the series had a short run, the experience gave Adams a chance to learn about medical situations that she never expected to use outside of acting.

Years after the incident, Adams said she unexpectedly met the man she helped. She was at a restaurant when someone approached her and mentioned a story about a woman and her father helping a stabbing victim.

“A guy walks up to me… He’s like, ‘I heard a story that you and your dad were on the scene of a guy getting stabbed,’” Adams said. “And I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s you.’ And it was him.”

The actress said the reunion was a surprising reminder that even a small role from early in her career ended up having a real impact. What started as preparation for a TV character became knowledge that helped her stay calm during a life-threatening situation.
