‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Sets Streaming Release After Billion-Dollar Box Office Success
‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ is leaving theaters behind and is now ready to arrive on streaming. After becoming one of the biggest movies of the year and earning more than $1 billion worldwide, the animated adventure will officially be available on Peacock starting July 30.
The news comes after the film completed a huge box office run that turned it into another major success for Nintendo and Illumination. The movie was directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, and Pierre Leduc, the same creative team that helped bring fans the first ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie.’ That earlier film was also a massive hit, ranking as one of the highest-grossing movies of 2023.
With ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ the filmmakers expanded the world of Mario by taking the characters beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and into a much bigger space adventure. The movie quickly connected with audiences around the world, helping it become the highest-grossing movie of the year so far and pushing past the $1 billion mark at the global box office earlier this month.

The film also brought back many familiar voices from the first movie. Chris Pratt returned as Mario, while Charlie Day once again voiced Luigi. Anya Taylor-Joy came back as Princess Peach, Jack Black returned as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key continued his role as Toad.
The sequel also introduced several new characters with a bigger voice cast. Donald Glover joined the franchise as Yoshi, Brie Larson voiced Rosalina, Glen Powell played Fox McCloud, and Benny Safdie took on the role of Bowser Junior.
The success of the movie continues the strong partnership between Nintendo and Illumination. In an interview with Forbes, Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri discussed why ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ was chosen as the next story to bring to the big screen.
Miyamoto explained that the galaxy setting “clicked as a key to creating the next movie.” He said the concept allowed the team to explore a “different side” of Mario while creating a new world filled with more possibilities and excitement.
Meledandri also explained that bringing Nintendo’s space-based world to theaters was an exciting opportunity. He said the idea of creating a massive cinematic version of Nintendo’s universe was something that could attract audiences. “The promise of creating Nintendo’s world of space felt like an irresistible invitation for audiences to go ‘Ah, I want to see how they are going to fill up that giant screen with Nintendo’s vision of space,’” he said.
Although Nintendo and Illumination have not officially announced a third movie, fans already have reasons to believe another adventure could happen. The ending of ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ includes a scene after the credits that introduces Daisy, a popular character from the Mario universe, suggesting that the story could continue in the future.
For now, fans who missed the movie in theaters or want to experience Mario’s latest adventure again will soon have the chance to watch it from home when it arrives on Peacock.
