Joe and Anthony Russo are not ready to call it quits with Marvel Studios just yet. During a conversation at SXSW London highlighted by Cosmic Marvel, the directing duo addressed whether they would keep making films for the studio once ‘Avengers: Secret Wars‘ wraps up the current saga, and their answer left plenty of room for a future return.

Speaking at the event, Anthony Russo was asked directly whether the pair could continue making Marvel films after Secret Wars, and he first pointed back to Avengers: Endgame, which the brothers had similarly viewed as the conclusion of a story arc they began with Captain America The Winter Soldier.

“The stories that we’re focused on now are complete. ‘Doomsday‘ and ‘Secret Wars’ speak with one another as two films, and they form a complete expression,” Anthony explained, according to Deadline. He added that whether the whole team collaborates with Marvel again beyond that point is certainly a possibility, though the current focus remains entirely on finishing Secret Wars.

Joe Russo kept things lighter when pressed on what comes next, joking that the brothers would check back in on their own appearance in photos come 2028 before making any promises. The pair also revealed they are currently pulling double duty on both films, fine tuning the visual effects on one while laying the creative groundwork for the other at the same time.

Joe Russo noted the team is still doing work on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and expects to remain on it until roughly November, when the film will effectively be taken out of their hands and handed to others to finish for a few weeks. Meanwhile, ‘Secret Wars’ has already moved into what the brothers describe as pre production, even as they juggle both projects simultaneously.

The comments follow months of speculation about the Russos possibly extending their MCU tenure even further. Fan outlet The Cosmic Circus has claimed the Russos are already developing an additional Avengers movie beyond the two currently announced, a report suggesting the project could either stand alone or emerge from Secret Wars being split into two films. That rumor remains unverified, and nothing the Russos said at SXSW London confirms another film is actively underway, though Anthony’s response makes the idea sound more plausible than pure speculation.

Do you want the Russo Brothers to direct more Marvel movies after 'Avengers: Secret Wars'?

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set for release on December 18, 2026, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following on December 17, 2027, and the two films are designed to function as a single closed narrative arc rather than the start of an open-ended run. Robert Downey Jr. returns as Doctor Doom across both entries, marking one of the more significant villain shifts the franchise has attempted in years.

For now, Marvel fans will have to settle for reading between the lines. The Russos have made clear that Secret Wars is their finish line for this particular commitment, but between the unconfirmed Cosmic Circus report and Anthony’s own refusal to close the door, it sounds like this might not be the last time AGBO and Marvel Studios end up back in business together.
