Apple TV’s new limited series has arrived, and it wastes no time throwing its leading lady into chaos. ‘Lucky‘ follows con artist Lucky, who is forced to go on the run after a multi-million-dollar heist goes sideways, pursued by both the FBI and a ruthless crime boss trying to fight for her life and a way out.

Anya Taylor-Joy plays the eponymous career conwoman, a character whose name turns out to be an ironic twist given how much misfortune follows her around. With the first two episodes now streaming, fans are already buzzing about the twisty premiere and the more grounded follow-up hour.

‘Lucky’ Episode 1 Recap and Breakdown

The premiere opens with Luciana, known as Lucky, running from the FBI before getting cornered in a parking lot full of trucks. The story then rewinds about twelve hours to show Luciana and her husband Cary in their Vegas hotel room, fantasizing about their future with suitcases full of cash.

Through news broadcasts playing while Lucky sneaks out of the casino, viewers learn her real name is Luciana Armstrong, and that she and Cary are the subjects of a nationwide manhunt after stealing ten million dollars in government money. Luciana wakes up the next morning to find both Cary and the money gone, having apparently been drugged the night before.

Luciana also has a hazy dream about a conversation with her imprisoned father John, who hints that he had been secretly skimming money from a biodiesel scheme without the knowledge of a mob figure named Priscilla. That flashback bleeds into the present as she gets cornered again, this time by a man named Mason, who is run over by a car driven by Dutch, who then forces her at gunpoint to join Priscilla.

Priscilla, it turns out, was also recently released from prison, and she wants to know where her money and her son Cary have gone. Lucky ultimately escapes her captors by burning through her restraints with her father’s lighter, using flares from an emergency kit to cause a car crash, and stabbing one of her attackers with a screwdriver before walking calmly into the desert as the wreckage burns behind her.

“Make ’em Dance” Story Details

Episode two opens with another flashback of Lucky and Cary collecting the cash from a self storage unit before reality sets back in. Lucky is shown staggering through the Nevada desert until she stumbles onto a remote property, where she spends the bulk of the episode.

Anya Taylor-Joy Steals the Spotlight at the ‘Lucky’ World Premiere

After killing a rattlesnake with a rock so she can steal water from a hose, Lucky is taken in by a woman named Sylvia and her curious grandchildren, who treat her wounds and give her something to drink. This is where ‘Lucky’ slows its pace considerably compared to the breathless chase energy of the premiere.

Meanwhile, Priscilla pays John a visit in prison, but the conversation goes nowhere since John genuinely does not know where Luciana or Cary are, or what happened to the stolen money. The two trade veiled threats about John supposedly backstabbing Priscilla by stealing from her, and Priscilla eventually leaves empty handed.

Anya Taylor-Joy’s Character Analysis and Critical Reception

Critics have been split on the early episodes. Ready Steady Cut noted that ‘Lucky’ begins at a breakneck pace and does not really slow down in the premiere, calling it effective for a first episode but offering little for viewers to grab onto beyond pure intrigue.

That same outlet was more favorable toward the second episode, arguing ‘Lucky’ benefits from a more even focus and a bit more moral complexity, even if it still is not quite as engaging as it could be. The review pointed out that viewers are still rooting for Taylor-Joy to pull off cool conwoman tricks, while also being asked to second guess how cynically she plays the victim card and how casually she sets people on fire.

Apple TV

TV Obsessive echoed similar sentiments, noting that Taylor-Joy shows multiple sides of Lucky across the first two hours, including the young woman in love, the fugitive, the reluctant daughter of a criminal, and the manipulator, with the most honest version being the one who does whatever it takes to survive. That recap also singled out Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor’s Agent Billie Rand as a somewhat clichéd law enforcement figure who is nonetheless committed to tracking Lucky down.

Not every outlet has been as generous. The HoloFiles argued the show squanders an all-star cast with a painfully routine story filled with implausibilities, conveniences, and gaps in logic. On the more positive end, a review from Alise Chaffins described ‘Lucky’ as a clever, fast-paced thriller starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Timothy Olyphant that is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Cast and Release Schedule for ‘Lucky’ Season 1

The series stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Lucky, Timothy Olyphant as John, Annette Bening as Priscilla, and Clifton Collins Jr. as Dutch, with Matthew Rauch appearing as Noah. The show was directed by Jet Wilkinson and Jonathan Van Tulleken, with scripts from Cassie Pappas and Jonathan Tropper.

As for when to expect more, new episodes of ‘Lucky’ are set to arrive weekly on Wednesdays on Apple TV. The full season runs seven episodes total, blending crime, mystery, and drama across its run.

With Lucky now hiding out with a family who has no idea who she really is, and Priscilla still hunting for her missing money and son, the pieces are set for plenty of tension in the episodes ahead. Which side of Lucky do you think is the real one, the desperate survivor or the practiced con artist, and how long do you think she can keep Sylvia’s family in the dark before it all comes crashing down?
