Hollywood has spent the past few years chasing the kind of sweeping, mythology-driven spectacle that can pull audiences back into theaters for something bigger than the usual franchise fare. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ proved earlier this year that ancient stories still have box office muscle when given the right scale and craftsmanship.

India’s film industry is now making its own play for that same territory, and the ambition behind it is staggering by any measure. What’s emerging is being described as one of the most expensive productions ever made outside Hollywood, aiming to bring one of the subcontinent’s most sacred stories to a truly global stage.

The official trailer for ‘Ramayana‘ has now arrived, giving audiences their most substantial look yet at Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part adaptation of the ancient Hindu epic, with the film set for a worldwide theatrical release beginning November 6. The story follows exiled prince Rama, played by Ranbir Kapoor, and his wife Sita, played by Sai Pallavi, through exile and catastrophe as Sita’s abduction at the hands of the demon king Ravana, played by Yash, sets an epic war between righteousness and evil into motion.

The numbers behind ‘Ramayana’ help explain why the trailer has generated so much attention. Both parts of the film were shot for IMAX, with the two installments carrying a combined budget of roughly $500 million, positioning it among the most expensive movies ever produced. Producer Namit Malhotra has separately stated the budget exceeds $400 million, underscoring just how much financial weight the project is carrying regardless of the exact figure.

That scale extends to the film’s creative pedigree as well. Score duties are shared between Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman, while visual effects are being handled by DNEG, the eight-time Oscar-winning VFX house behind the “Dune” movies, “Interstellar,” and “Inception.” Sony Pictures signed on as international distributor for the project, handling every territory outside India, while Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions oversees Indian distribution.

The release date isn’t a coincidence. Diwali marks the return of Rama to his kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over Ravana, with the holiday’s tradition of lighting lamps said to represent the illumination of Ayodhya on the night the prince came home. Releasing during that exact window ties the film directly to the cultural and religious significance of the story it’s telling.

Part 1 is expected to build toward Sita’s abduction, leaving the rescue campaign and the climactic battle for Part 2, which is scheduled to arrive during Diwali 2027. The film’s ensemble cast also includes Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari, Arun Govil, Indira Krishnan, and Lara Dutta.

The comparisons being drawn around ‘Ramayana’ aren’t subtle. The project is being positioned as India’s answer to films like “The Lord of the Rings,” “Avatar,” and “Gladiator,” with the explicit goal of achieving for Indian mythology what Nolan’s “The Odyssey” accomplished for Greek myths earlier this year.

Kapoor, Yash, Tiwari, and Malhotra appeared at San Diego Comic-Con to debut new footage and discuss the making of the two films, signaling just how aggressively the production is courting international audiences ahead of release. With a budget and scale rarely attempted outside major Hollywood studios, ‘Ramayana’ now carries the weight of proving that Indian mythological storytelling can command a truly global box office stage.
