Marvel has never been shy about digging into its oldest comic book vaults, and ‘VisionQuest’ is proving to be one of the most nostalgic dives yet. The Disney+ series, created by showrunner Terry Matalas, closes out the trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’. It follows Paul Bettany’s White Vision as he tries to regain his memories and his humanity, with James Spader’s Ultron lurking in the background. The cast also includes James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S., Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y. and Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H.

Along the way, the show has been quietly planting seeds about Vision’s origins. A 34-second teaser trailer showed a man on fire in the middle of a large library, a brief moment that further confirmed an appearance by Jim Hammond. Fans quickly began wondering whether that blazing silhouette was a nod to one of Marvel’s most overlooked heroes.

Now a new poster leans all the way in. The artwork for the original Human Torch in ‘VisionQuest’ is a moody, painterly piece that shows a lone figure standing in a street, engulfed in flames, as fire and embers rage up the buildings on both sides. The tagline across the top reads “From the studio that brought you WandaVision,” while the Marvel Television logo and a “Now streaming” banner sit at the bottom.

If the composition feels familiar, that is because the show has been teasing it for a while. At Disney’s D23 event, the series booth displayed a painting of a single burning man standing in the middle of a narrow road with buildings on either side, which led many fans to speculate that the original Human Torch was on the way. The new poster appears to carry that same image into the official marketing campaign.

The show then confirmed the connection in its second episode. J.A.R.V.I.S. points Vision toward a painting of the first of their kind, which shows a burning synthezoid, and warns him about the perils of unchecked emotion. The synthezoid in question reportedly died because he could not control his feelings, which positions him as a cautionary tale for Vision.

Marvel Studios Reportedly Sees ‘VisionQuest’ as a Win, and Its Future in the MCU Could Be Bigger Than Expected

This is not Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four. The original Human Torch is Jim Hammond, an android who first appeared in ‘Marvel Comics’ #1 in 1939, back when the publisher was still known as Timely Comics. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby later reused the Human Torch name and fire powers for Johnny Storm, but the two characters share no connection.

Hammond’s biggest storylines involved the Invaders, a wartime squad featuring Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Namor and Hammond’s young partner Toro. He also has a surprisingly close tie to Vision in the comics, where Vision’s body was the discarded and lifeless form of the original Human Torch.

Hammond has technically been lurking in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years. In ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ an android suit sits on display at Howard Stark’s Stark Expo, labeled “Phineas Horton Presents: The Synthetic Man” rather than the Human Torch. For a long time, that was the only reference to the character in the franchise.

Now ‘VisionQuest’ is finally giving that old Easter egg a place in the story. It is still unclear exactly how much screen time Hammond will get or how his history will tie into the larger arc of the series. The show keeps the specifics of his downfall deliberately vague for now.

The poster also shows how confidently Marvel Television is embracing deep-cut comic book lore. Instead of a standard character-lineup one-sheet, the studio chose a painted image of a burning android on a dark street, which fits the tone of a series about memory, identity and the machines that came before Vision.

The series runs for 8 episodes, and the Disney+ release has been rolling out weekly rather than all at once. That structure leaves plenty of room for the mystery of Jim Hammond to keep building as the season moves toward its finale.

Are you excited to see the original Human Torch, Jim Hammond, appear in VisionQuest?
