‘Pokémon’ Just Announced Its First New Movie in Seven Years with a Brand New Trailer

The Pokémon franchise has built an empire out of trainers battling their way across sprawling regions, but its next theatrical outing is ditching that formula entirely. After going nearly seven years without a new film in theaters, the franchise just confirmed its comeback movie, and it’s built around a completely different side of the Pokémon world than fans are used to seeing on the big screen.

That absence has been notable for a franchise that once released animated movies almost annually, with the last theatrical entry, ‘Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle’, premiering back in 2020. In the years since, Pokémon has leaned heavily into shorter-form content and streaming specials rather than full theatrical releases, making any new movie announcement a genuinely rare event at this point.

That drought is officially ending with ‘Pokémon: Wild Card’, a new animated film revealed alongside a teaser trailer at this year’s Pokémon World Championships. Unlike previous entries centered on trainers and their creatures battling across the wild, this film follows a competitive Pokémon Trading Card Game player and his partner Mimikyu as they work toward becoming a champion of the card game itself.

That shift in focus marks a genuine departure for the franchise. For three decades, Pokémon movies have followed the same core structure of trainers and their Pokémon facing off in battle, so building an entire film around the act of playing cards rather than traditional creature-versus-creature combat represents one of the more unusual creative swings the franchise has taken in years.

‘Pokémon: Wild Card’ is being animated by CloverWorks, the studio behind hits like ‘Spy x Family’, ‘My Dress-Up Darling’, and ‘The Elusive Samurai’. Katsuhiko Kitada is directing the project, while character designer Akemi Hayashi, known for her work on ‘Banana Fish’ and ‘Fruits Basket’, is handling the film’s visual identity. STORY inc. is producing the movie alongside the studio’s creative team.

Bringing in a studio with CloverWorks’ pedigree suggests Pokémon is aiming for a noticeably different visual approach compared to past theatrical entries, many of which were handled by longtime franchise animation partner OLM. Pairing that studio shift with a storyline centered on competitive card play rather than wild Pokémon encounters signals a broader attempt to modernize the franchise’s theatrical output for an audience that’s grown up alongside the games and the trading card game simultaneously.

Beyond the teaser trailer and a dedicated promotional website, details remain scarce for now. No cast list, extended trailer, or specific release date within 2027 has been confirmed, leaving plenty of open questions about how the story will unfold and whether it ties into the existing animated series’ continuity or stands as its own separate universe.

Given the timing of the announcement alongside the World Championships, it’s a safe bet that more promotional material tied to card game tournaments and product releases will roll out as the 2027 release window approaches. For a franchise that’s spent decades focused on trainers catching and battling creatures, building an entire movie around the strategy and competitive spirit of the card game feels like a meaningful bet on where Pokémon’s audience has grown since its last theatrical release.
