Focus Features Is Betting Big on Inde Navarrette for a Best Actress Oscar Run for ‘Obsession’ Performance

Horror movies have historically had to fight twice as hard for Oscar recognition, with the Academy long treating the genre as beneath the kind of prestige campaigns reserved for dramas. That’s been shifting in recent years, with wins for films like ‘Sinners’ and ‘Weapons’ suggesting the branch’s old biases are starting to loosen.

That shift has opened the door for one of the year’s biggest surprise success stories to make a serious run at the ceremony. ‘Obsession,’ the low-budget horror-romance from writer-director Curry Barker, has already become the highest-grossing original film of the decade, pulling in more than $505 million worldwide on a production budget of just $750,000.

Now, Focus Features is turning that box office momentum into an official awards push. Inde Navarrette will campaign in the Best Actress category for ‘Obsession,’ with the studio planning a wide-ranging effort to secure recognition for the film across nearly every eligible category.

Navarrette’s turn as Nikki in ‘Obsession’ has drawn consistent praise for balancing terror and sympathy within a single performance, playing a character caught between victimhood and menace after being cursed with an uncontrollable obsession by a magical artifact. Less than six months ago, she was best known for a relatively small supporting role on The CW’s ‘Superman & Lois,’ making this Oscar push a dramatic career leap in a remarkably short window.

Alongside Navarrette, Focus Features also intends to campaign director Curry Barker as a triple threat across Best Director, Original Screenplay, and Film Editing, echoing the same three-category sweep Sean Baker pulled off with ‘Anora.’ The full submission list additionally includes recognition pushes in sound, with mixers YJ Gold and Ben Zarai, and makeup and hairstyling, led by department head Allie Shehorn.

Navarrette’s placement in the lead actress category rather than supporting is itself a notable strategic choice, since studios sometimes opt for a “lesser” category if they believe an actor has better odds there. Given how central her performance is to the film’s success, though, campaigning her as a lead appears to be the more natural fit despite the tougher competition that category typically brings.

Part of what makes this push feel plausible rather than wishful is the current state of the Best Actress field itself, which industry observers have described as relatively thin heading into this awards season. With Julianne Moore’s performance in ‘The Debut’ still largely unseen by voters and few other major contenders generating buzz, Navarrette’s breakout turn arrives at a moment when the category genuinely has room for a surprise contender.

Focus Features also has a clear playbook to draw from in horror’s recent awards momentum, following the model Jordan Peele used with ‘Get Out’ back in 2017, when the film competed as a comedy and ultimately landed four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, along with a win for Best Original Screenplay. Whether ‘Obsession’ pursues a similar genre-category strategy remains to be seen, but the comparison signals real confidence from the studio.

With ‘Obsession’ already standing as one of the year’s most unexpected box office triumphs, this awards campaign gives Navarrette a genuine shot at turning a breakout horror performance into Oscar recognition.
