Live-action video game adaptations have become one of Hollywood’s most reliable trends, but few casting announcements have generated quite as much excitement as the news that Dave Bautista would be stepping into one of gaming’s most physically demanding roles. Between his wrestling background and his string of action-heavy film credits, Bautista has spent years building a reputation as an actor who takes physical transformation seriously.

That reputation is now being put to the test in a very public way. Bautista was officially cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action adaptation of “God of War” after original lead Ryan Hurst exited the project following a torn bicep injury sustained on set, and the actor wasted no time diving into preparation for the role.

Taking to Instagram, Bautista shared a shirtless training update showing off his progress just weeks into his new regimen. “3rd week in to weight training again. 2 more months to get to where I need to be. Like ridin a bike! LFG!” Bautista wrote.

What makes Bautista’s current transformation particularly notable is the road he’s traveled to get here. The actor previously underwent a dramatic weight loss, dropping from roughly 315 pounds during his WWE career down to around 240 pounds as he deliberately moved away from the bulkier frame that once defined his professional wrestling and early Hollywood roles.

Bautista has been candid in the past about why he made that change, explaining that carrying his old size became uncomfortable both physically and on camera. “I’m still a large human being. At 6’4 and 240 pounds next to your typical actor, I look like a gorilla, and it’s distracting. I’ll probably lose a few more pounds. I’m just killing myself to be this trim,” Bautista said, according to SFF Gazette.

Now, at 57 years old, the actor finds himself needing to reverse course and rebuild significant muscle mass to portray one of gaming’s most famously imposing characters. Bautista has also reflected on how his approach to fitness has evolved with age, noting that his current training methods have left him feeling better than he has in years thanks to improved cardio and overall conditioning.

The Kratos role carries specific physical expectations given the character’s decades-long history in the “God of War” video game franchise, where he’s traditionally depicted with an exceptionally muscular, battle-hardened physique as the former Spartan warrior turned Ghost of Sparta. Hurst had reportedly spent months adding significant size to his frame before his injury forced the production to pivot.

Bautista now faces the opposite challenge, working to rebuild the kind of mass he spent years deliberately shedding. Fans and fitness commentators have already taken notice of his rapid progress just three weeks into training, with many pointing to his wrestling background as evidence he has the experience needed to hit his target physique on a compressed timeline.

The Prime Video series, developed by Ronald D. Moore and ordered for two seasons, will follow Kratos and his son Atreus as the pair navigate their complicated father-son relationship while spreading the ashes of Kratos’ late wife, Faye. Bautista will star alongside Callum Vinson, Teresa Palmer, and Max Parker in the adaptation of the beloved PlayStation franchise.

With production expected to resume now that Bautista has officially stepped into the role, all eyes remain on his continued transformation as he works toward the finish line of his three-month training timeline.
