Christopher Judge Clarifies He’s Not Chasing the Kratos Role in Amazon’s ‘God of War’
Christopher Judge spent years defining Kratos for millions of players, voicing the God of War through the character’s acclaimed Norse era across both the 2018 reboot and its 2022 sequel, ‘Ragnarok.’ That performance earned him a Game Award for Best Performance and cemented his status as one of gaming’s most respected voice actors, making his recent comments about Amazon’s live-action adaptation carry significant weight within a fandom already anxious about how the show will handle its beloved source material.
Those comments came during a recent Fan Expo panel, where Judge openly criticized how studios have approached video game adaptations in general, singling out both Amazon’s in-development ‘God of War’ series and HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ for not bringing in the people who actually built the original games. His remarks quickly circulated online, sparking debate among fans about what exactly Judge was advocating for.
That debate prompted speculation that Judge’s criticism stemmed from a personal desire to play Kratos himself in the live-action series, since he will not be reprising the role on screen. Responding directly to a fan who suggested his real point was about hiring the same writers and developers who already delivered a fantastic job on the games, Judge clarified his position, writing that he was speaking specifically about the industry’s writers and developers rather than pushing for himself to be cast.
In his response, Judge acknowledged his own age working against him for the physical role, joking that his kids remind him he’s “old as balls,” while expressing hope that whoever takes over as Kratos finds the same success actor Ryan Hurst had before his on-set injury forced a recasting. He reiterated that his primary concern was making sure writers and developers of beloved games receive the recognition and respect he believes they deserve, adding that this applies broadly across the industry and not just to God of War specifically.

Judge’s original comments at Fan Expo focused on a broader pattern he sees across video game adaptations. According to Judge, when Amazon’s ‘God of War’ series was finally approved and announced, the production didn’t hire any of the franchise’s original writers, prompting him to ask why studios assume someone else will understand the material better than the people who spent two decades building it.
He extended that criticism to ‘The Last of Us,’ praising Pedro Pascal’s performance while still questioning why the original game’s voice cast wasn’t given more direct involvement in the television adaptation. Judge framed his frustration as part of a wider industry trend, arguing that studios routinely take successful, pre-existing properties and then assemble entirely new creative teams rather than drawing on the people already immersed in that world.
Amazon’s ‘God of War’ adaptation, ordered to series with ‘Wheel of Time’ showrunner Rafe Judkins at the helm, is set to follow the events of the 2018 game as Kratos and his son Atreus journey through the Norse realm of Midgard. The project has faced recent setbacks after Ryan Hurst, originally cast as Kratos, suffered a bicep tear during filming, forcing the production to recast the role, with Dave Bautista reportedly among those in consideration as his replacement.
Judge himself has not confirmed whether he’ll have any involvement with the series, cameo or otherwise, and it remains unclear how his public comments might affect that relationship going forward. With casting uncertainty already surrounding the Kratos role and now public commentary from the character’s most recent and celebrated voice actor, Amazon’s series faces mounting pressure to prove it can honor the source material’s depth before it even reaches screens.
