Ariana Grande Faces Off With Robert De Niro’s Lie Detector in the New ‘Focker In-Law’ Trailer

Comedy franchises don’t often get the chance to flip their own formula on its head decades after the fact, but that’s exactly what’s happening with one of the genre’s most enduring family sagas. Nearly 26 years after Ben Stiller first endured Robert De Niro’s polygraph machine and endless suspicion in ‘Meet the Parents,’ the tables are finally turning.

‘Meet the Parents’ became a genuine phenomenon back in 2000, eventually spawning two sequels in ‘Meet the Fockers’ and ‘Little Fockers’ while cementing itself as a holiday-viewing staple built around escalating in-law chaos. Now, the franchise is returning for a fourth installment that puts Stiller’s character on the opposite side of the family dynamic he once feared.

That new chapter, titled ‘Focker In-Law,’ has just released a fresh trailer confirming its theatrical release date of November 25, with Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, and Ariana Grande all headlining the comedy’s latest round of uncomfortable family gatherings.

Directed by John Hamburg, who previously wrote all three prior films in the franchise, ‘Focker In-Law’ flips the original premise by putting Stiller’s Greg Focker in the intimidating, skeptical position once occupied by De Niro’s Jack Byrnes. This time, Grande’s character, Olivia Jones, is the one being scrutinized as the girlfriend of Greg and Pam’s son, Henry, played by Skyler Gisondo.

Speaking about the role reversal at the center of the film, Stiller explained his character is “going through this same experience” that De Niro’s Jack once put him through, describing Grande as “a joy to work with” and someone who brings “a very, very new sensibility” to the franchise, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The new footage leans hard into that dynamic, introducing Olivia as a former FBI hostage negotiator who insists she’s perfectly equipped to “free” Henry from being held “emotionally hostage” by his overbearing father. That premise immediately unsettles Greg, while simultaneously winning over Jack, who takes an instant liking to Olivia and wants her welcomed into the family’s inner circle of trust.

‘Focker In-Law’ brings back much of the franchise’s original ensemble, with De Niro reprising his role as Jack Byrnes, Blythe Danner returning as Dina Byrnes, Teri Polo back as Pam Byrnes Focker, and Owen Wilson once again playing Kevin Rawley. Joining the returning cast are newcomers Beanie Feldstein as Samantha Focker and Eduardo Franco, rounding out the film’s blend of familiar faces and fresh energy.

Reflecting on her character’s dynamic with the film’s ensemble during a 2026 Actors on Actors conversation, Grande described Olivia as someone Stiller’s character isn’t sure of or connecting with, adding that the situation only gets worse for Greg since Olivia “get[s] along gorgeously” with De Niro’s Jack, according to Variety. That built-in tension between generations appears central to the film’s comedic engine, echoing the franchise’s long-running formula of familial anxiety and unexpected alliances.

The original ‘Meet the Parents’ grossed $330 million worldwide upon release, establishing the franchise as a genuine box office force before its sequels continued that success throughout the 2000s and into 2010. With Grande now stepping into the fold as a bona fide comedic lead, ‘Focker In-Law’ appears to be banking on both nostalgic goodwill and Grande’s rising star power to reintroduce the franchise to a new generation of moviegoers.

With the film’s November 25 release date positioning it for the holiday movie season, much like its predecessors, ‘Focker In-Law’ looks set to lean into the same family-gathering chaos that made the original trilogy such a reliable comfort watch.
