Apple TV Unveils First Teaser & Release Date for ‘Tenzing,’ the True Story of Everest’s Forgotten Hero

Mount Everest has inspired countless films chasing the thrill of survival at extreme altitude, but few have paused to center the story on the man who actually made the historic climb possible. That gap in cinematic history is exactly what Apple’s newest original film is setting out to fill.

‘Tenzing‘ tells the remarkable true story of Tenzing Norgay, the Himalayan Sherpa who, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary, became one of the first two people to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jennifer Peedom, known for her earlier documentary “Sherpa,” the project reframes one of history’s most celebrated adventures through the eyes of a figure who has too often been reduced to a footnote in Hillary’s story.

Apple has now released the first teaser for the film, confirming its lead cast and locking in a release strategy that will bring ‘Tenzing’ to theaters on October 9 before premiering on Apple TV on October 16.

Genden Phuntsok stars as Tenzing Norgay, with Tom Hiddleston portraying Edmund Hillary and Willem Dafoe playing expedition leader Colonel John Hunt. According to Apple TV Press, the film also stars Caitríona Balfe as expedition secretary Jill Henderson and Thinley Lhamo as Tenzing’s wife, Dawa, who helps persuade Hunt that Tenzing belongs on the British climbing team as a true climber rather than mere support staff.

That framing sits at the heart of what makes ‘Tenzing’ distinct from prior Everest-focused films. According to Apple TV Press, the story deliberately highlights the contrast between how Western climbers viewed Everest as something to be conquered, while Tenzing revered the mountain as Chomolungma, the sacred mother goddess, a spiritual distinction the film uses to explore the deeper cultural tensions embedded in the historic 1953 expedition.

The screenplay comes from Luke Davies, with production handled by See-Saw Films, the Oscar-winning company behind “The King’s Speech.” Production reportedly began in 2025, with filming taking place across multiple locations in Nepal, including the Everest region, Mustang, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Bandipur.

‘Tenzing’ isn’t arriving quietly. The film will open the 22nd Zurich Film Festival on September 24 in its European premiere, following its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 15. Hiddleston, Dafoe, and Peedom are all expected to attend the Zurich opening night gala, signaling significant awards-season positioning for the project.

That festival rollout gives ‘Tenzing’ considerable visibility ahead of its wider theatrical and streaming release, positioning it alongside other prestige titles vying for attention during the fall movie season. The film’s dual release strategy, opening in select theaters a week before its Apple TV debut, mirrors the approach Apple has taken with several of its recent original films.

Tenzing Norgay’s real-life journey to the summit came after six previous attempts, and his historic 1953 achievement went on to shape generations of Sherpa mountaineers who followed in his footsteps. His path from porter to celebrated guide set a template that influenced later Nepalese climbers, cementing his legacy well beyond that single historic ascent.

With a strong festival launch already secured and a cast anchored by Hiddleston and Dafoe, ‘Tenzing’ looks poised to bring long-overdue cinematic attention to one of mountaineering’s most significant yet historically overshadowed figures.
