‘Wild Horse Nine’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Is In: Martin McDonagh’s John Malkovich-Led CIA Comedy Sparks Awards Buzz

Martin McDonagh has built a career on prickly, deadpan character studies that mix dark comedy with genuine emotional weight, from the fractured hitmen of ‘In Bruges’ to the fractured friendship at the center of ‘The Banshees of Inisherin.’ His latest project trades those settings for a very different backdrop, though the tone remains unmistakably his own.

‘Wild Horse Nine‘ follows two CIA operatives, Chris and Lee, played by John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, as they’re dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island by their bureau chief MJ, played by Steve Buscemi, shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup that would overthrow the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, giving critics their first look at McDonagh’s fifth feature and his latest exploration of morally compromised men grappling with the weight of their own history.

Now that reviews have rolled in, ‘Wild Horse Nine’ currently sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 15 reviews, positioning the film as one of the more talked-about titles to emerge from this year’s Venice lineup, with Searchlight Pictures set to release it domestically on November 6.

Much of the critical praise has centered on Malkovich’s performance, with several reviewers describing it as one of the film’s defining strengths. Variety’s review noted that Chris is dealing with late-stage cancer and early-stage dementia, dictating memoir excerpts into a recorder while grappling with his role in decades of American intervention abroad, calling Malkovich’s understated performance central to the film’s emotional impact, according to Variety.

That blend of dark comedy and genuine pathos echoes McDonagh’s established formula, drawing comparisons across multiple reviews to his earlier work. The Hollywood Reporter’s review described the film as combining “the wry humor of In Bruges’ fractious hitmen” with “the melancholic island setting of The Banshees of Inisherin,” arguing that the result resonates in ways both personal and political, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Not every critic walked away fully convinced. IndieWire’s review was more measured, describing the film as “prickly but unconvincing” and arguing it “strains to translate the post-Guy Ritchie bark of ‘In Bruges’ into the language of a classic American Western,” according to IndieWire. TheWrap’s review was even more pointed, calling it “McDonagh’s driest crime comedy,” while still praising Malkovich’s individual performance as “glorious,” according to TheWrap.

The film’s setting during the lead-up to Pinochet’s rise to power gives ‘Wild Horse Nine’ a heavier political undercurrent than some of McDonagh’s earlier comedies. According to Deadline, the story follows Chris and Lee as they navigate the fallout of American intervention in Chile while their trip is complicated by encounters with two Chilean tourists, played by Mariana di Girolamo and Ailín Salas, whose growing relationship with Chris pushes the film toward its emotionally charged climax.

The full cast also includes Parker Posey as Lee’s wife Marge and Tom Waits in a supporting role, rounding out an ensemble that reviewers have consistently praised for its chemistry, particularly the dynamic between Malkovich and Rockwell as longtime partners whose shared history grows increasingly uncomfortable over the course of the trip.

The film is generating early awards conversation, specifically pointing to Malkovich’s performance as a potential contender heading into the fall season. With Carter Burwell composing the score and Ben Davis behind the camera, the film’s below-the-line pedigree adds further weight to that awards positioning ahead of its wider release.

With a strong Rotten Tomatoes debut and a November theatrical release still weeks away, ‘Wild Horse Nine’ looks positioned to be one of the more discussed awards-season contenders once it reaches wider audiences.
