‘Resident Evil’ Just Unveiled Its Most Unhinged Movie Theater Merch Yet
Themed popcorn buckets have become their own strange corner of movie marketing over the past few years, with studios competing to design the most eye-catching, occasionally bizarre collectible to lure fans into theaters. From sandworms to horror icons, these buckets have turned into mini events of their own, generating buzz long before a film even opens.
Zach Cregger’s upcoming reimagining of ‘Resident Evil’ has already been building anticipation thanks to its R rating and gruesome tone, with Austin Abrams starring as Bryan, a medical courier caught in an outbreak while making a delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital. The film also stars Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser, and hits theaters on September 18.
Now, Cinemark has unveiled its version of the film’s popcorn bucket, and it’s exactly as unsettling as fans hoped. The collectible isn’t shaped like a traditional bucket at all, but rather a soft-sided medical courier bag designed to look like an organ-transplant cooler, complete with a shoulder strap and a green, first-aid-branded exterior.
According to Cinemark’s official shop listing, the bag holds a hefty 200 ounces, and customers are limited to purchasing a maximum of three units of the limited-edition item. The chain describes it as ideal for your “next cinematic operation or movie marathon,” leaning fully into the film’s medical-horror premise rather than shying away from it.
Cinemark isn’t the only theater chain getting in on the grotesque fun. AMC and Regal have also revealed their own versions of the same organ-transplant bag, with Regal notably clarifying in its promotional materials that the collectible does “not come with a beating heart,” despite images showing what looks unmistakably like one nestled among the popcorn.
Regal’s version of the bag is being sold alongside the film starting on release day, while AMC’s rollout begins on September 17, and Cinemark has confirmed its bucket is already available in stores. All three chains are treating the item as an in-theater exclusive, available only while supplies last, with none of them announcing an official price for the collectible.
The design leans directly into the plot of Cregger’s take on the franchise, which trades the series’ usual zombie-outbreak formula for a tighter, more grounded story centered on Abrams’ character and his fateful delivery. Fans online have pointed out that the bag’s aesthetic also echoes the “Insert First Aid Kit” box from the ‘Resident Evil’ remake video game, giving longtime players of the Capcom series an extra layer of recognition.
It’s a fitting piece of merchandise for a director known for turning familiar horror setups into something far more unnerving than expected. After ‘Barbarian’ and ‘Weapons’, Cregger has built a reputation for taking recognizable premises and twisting them until they’re deeply uncomfortable to sit with, and this popcorn bucket seems to be following that same spirit right down to the concession stand.
Whether or not the bag ends up being the most talked-about part of opening weekend, it’s already succeeded in getting people talking well before the movie even hits screens. Between the shoulder strap, the “Keep Cool” warning labels, and the unmistakably squeamish presentation, Cinemark’s take on the collectible has given fans one more reason to show up in person rather than wait for streaming.
Is this the coolest—or craziest—movie collectible yet?
