‘Fauda’ Creator Says the Show’s New Season Confronts the Most Difficult Story They’ve Ever Told

‘Fauda‘ has spent five seasons building a reputation as one of Israeli television’s most globally recognized exports, an intense undercover thriller that put the country’s television industry on the map internationally. Created by Lior Raz and Avi Issacharoff, the series has always drawn heavily on the real-life experiences of its creators, giving its portrayal of the region’s conflicts an unusually personal edge.

That personal connection took on an entirely different weight following the events of October 7, 2023. Raz and Issacharoff were both away from Israel when the Hamas attacks occurred, with Raz making his way to the frontlines within days to help evacuate civilians alongside a rescue group, an experience that would go on to reshape the show’s entire trajectory going forward.

Season five, which had already been confirmed before the attacks took place, was significantly rewritten in their aftermath. According to Raz, tackling October 7 and its consequences directly within the show represents maybe the most important thing he and Issacharoff have ever written, in an interview he gave to the New York Times ahead of the season’s premiere.

The new season’s synopsis picks up two years after the attacks, following the show’s team of fighters as they’re forced into a race against time to stop a catastrophic attack on Israel, all while still visibly haunted by the trauma of what they lived through. That framing places the emotional aftermath of October 7 front and center rather than treating it as background context.

Given that the Gaza war was still actively unfolding while the season was being written, the creative team made a deliberate choice to steer the story almost entirely clear of Gaza itself, instead ranging across Europe, Israel, and other parts of the Middle East. Issacharoff explained that the goal was to stay as close to reality as possible while acknowledging that certain things are simply too difficult to depict on screen.

The production itself was directly touched by tragedy during the season’s development. Series team member Matan Meir was killed while serving in a counterterrorism operation in Gaza, and cast member Idan Amedi, who joined the IDF reserves following the attacks, was severely injured during combat operations in the region, both events that further shaped how the show’s creators approached telling this particular chapter of the story.

Raz has been candid about wanting the season to do more than simply entertain audiences. He said he wants viewers to genuinely connect with the show, but also hopes they’ll look into his character’s eyes and see what he and the rest of the team actually felt during those days, a goal that speaks to how personally invested the creators remain in getting this particular story right.

The season arrives amid an already fraught cultural landscape, with the show premiering alongside ongoing boycotts and broader public debate tied to the Israel-Gaza conflict. That backdrop adds another layer of scrutiny to a series that has always positioned itself as attempting to portray the complexities of the region rather than offering simple narratives.

‘Fauda’ season five streams globally on Netflix starting September 8, following its earlier premiere on Israel’s Yes network. With the creators describing this chapter as their most personally significant work yet, the new season arrives carrying weight far beyond its role as another entry in the franchise’s ongoing story.
