A New ‘Avengers’ Video Game Might Be Coming, and Marvel Reportedly Wants a Clean Break From the Past

Marvel’s gaming ambitions have taken some major swings over the past several years, with mixed results shaping how the studio approaches its biggest franchises on consoles and PC. Between the wild popularity of ‘Marvel Rivals’ and standout hits like ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’, the publisher has clearly figured out what works, even as some experiments have struggled to land with players.

That uneven track record makes any new rumor about a major Marvel property that much more interesting to parse. Superhero games live and die by execution, and fans have learned to be cautiously optimistic rather than immediately celebratory whenever a new title connected to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes starts making the rounds.

That’s exactly the situation surrounding the latest report about a potential new ‘Avengers‘ game, which insider Daniel Richtman claims is currently in development. According to Richtman, who shared the information with his followers, this new project will have no connection whatsoever to ‘Marvel’s Avengers’, the 2020 live-service title developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix.

That distinction matters a great deal given how poorly the previous game performed. ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ launched to a mixed reception, with some praise for its single-player campaign and hero-specific abilities, but ultimately struggled with repetitive gameplay and an uninspired endgame loop that failed to retain players. The game was eventually discontinued in 2023, leaving a noticeably rocky legacy behind.

Details beyond that basic confirmation remain scarce for now. Richtman has not identified a developer, publisher, platform, or release window for the new title, and Marvel itself has yet to officially acknowledge the project in any capacity, leaving much of the report firmly in rumor territory.

Still, the timing lines up with a broader pattern of Marvel testing the waters across multiple gaming avenues simultaneously. This isn’t the first time whispers of a new Avengers-related project have surfaced either, with earlier rumors pointing to a separate, unconfirmed MCU-connected game that may or may not be the same project Richtman is now describing.

It’s also worth noting that Marvel has historically given individual game studios significant creative freedom rather than forcing strict continuity across its various titles. Marvel Games VP Bill Rosemann previously explained that the company doesn’t require developers to tie their projects into a shared universe, allowing teams the freedom to take bold creative swings without worrying about affecting other games in the lineup.

That approach could work in this new project’s favor, especially if Marvel wants to distance itself entirely from the baggage surrounding the Square Enix game. Given the massive success of ‘Marvel Rivals’ and the acclaim surrounding Insomniac’s ‘Spider-Man’ titles, there’s clearly an appetite for well-executed Marvel gaming experiences, provided the studio backing this new Avengers project can stick the landing.

For now, fans are left speculating about who might be developing the game and what form it could ultimately take, whether that’s another live-service experiment or a more focused single-player adventure in the vein of recent Marvel gaming successes. Given how quiet Marvel has remained on the subject, concrete details likely won’t emerge until the studio is ready to make an official announcement.
