Charlie Hunnam Insists Sons of Anarchy’s ‘Legacy’ Revival Is Nothing like a Season 8

Few TV endings hit as hard as the one FX gave ‘Sons of Anarchy‘ back in 2014, when the show closed out its seven-season run by killing off most of its central characters, Charlie Hunnam’s Jax Teller included. For years, that finale stood as one of the more definitive send-offs in prestige cable drama, the kind of ending fans assumed would never be touched again.

So when FX quietly confirmed last month that the biker drama was coming back in some form, with Hunnam and much of the original cast attached, the reaction across social media was somewhere between excitement and total confusion. How exactly do you bring back a show whose entire ensemble got buried, burned, or arrested by the time the credits rolled?

Hunnam is now setting the record straight on what this new project actually is, and just as importantly, what it isn’t. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor confirmed the new series titled ‘Legacy’ is definitely not season 8 of ‘Sons of Anarchy.’

Instead of picking the story back up in Charming, California, the new series reportedly follows a far stranger premise. According to the official logline, the cast of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ reunites at a fan convention more than a decade after the show ended, only for the line between fiction and reality to blur as the group faces a real-world threat.

That means Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi are all expected to return, but not necessarily as Jax, Clay, Tara, and the rest of SAMCRO. The project has been described as a love letter to the original series wrapped in a meta twist on what longtime viewers think they already know about these characters.

Part of what makes the announcement land so unexpectedly is that Hunnam never wanted fans finding out this early. He told The Hollywood Reporter his desire was to keep it as secret as possible, but a handful of persistent outlets picked up on the project before FX was ready to reveal it, which pushed the studio to get ahead of the story with its own announcement on August 19.

That announcement confirmed ‘Sons of Anarchy’ creator Kurt Sutter is not directly involved in writing or producing ‘Legacy,’ even though his wife and franchise veteran Katey Sagal is attached to the cast. Sutter has reportedly given the project his public blessing despite stepping back from hands-on involvement.

FX Productions and 20th Television are handling production on the new series, which is set to air on FX before streaming on Hulu. Hunnam is developing and executive producing alongside Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn, keeping him closely involved behind the camera as well as in front of it.

Fan reaction to the concept has been mixed since the initial announcement, with some longtime viewers expressing skepticism about tampering with a finale many consider close to perfect. Others seem cautiously intrigued by the idea of watching the actual actors play heightened, fictionalized versions of themselves rather than resurrecting characters who were definitively written off years ago.

Whatever shape ‘Legacy’ ultimately takes, Hunnam’s comments make clear the team behind it is aware of the risk that comes with revisiting beloved, already-concluded material. By framing the project as something entirely separate from a traditional continuation, the actor appears to be trying to manage expectations before a single frame has aired.
