‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Cast Reunites As Charlie Hunnam Sets Meta Limited Series ‘Legends’ At FX
Some TV shows leave such a lasting mark that fans never fully let go of them, and ‘Sons of Anarchy’ has always sat near the top of that list. Kurt Sutter’s biker drama ran for seven seasons on FX and closed out in 2014, but its cultural footprint has stuck around, from Jax Teller’s leather cut to the show’s brutal, operatic sense of loyalty and betrayal.
Charlie Hunnam, the actor who anchored that world as Jax for the entirety of its run, has spent the years since building an increasingly acclaimed career, most recently earning his first Emmy nomination for his lead performance in FX’s ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story.’ That momentum appears to have opened the door for something fans have quietly hoped for since the show ended: a way back into that world.
FX has officially ordered ‘Legends,’ a new limited series developed and executive produced by Hunnam alongside Jonathan Groff, with Hunnam also starring. Rather than a traditional revival or spinoff, the series takes a meta approach, following the actual cast of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ as they reunite at a fan convention more than a decade after the show ended, only to find themselves entangled in a real-world threat far more dangerous than anything their characters ever faced on screen.
Joining Hunnam on the project is a substantial chunk of the original ensemble, with Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi all set to appear as themselves. FX has noted that additional casting will be announced at a later date, leaving room for even more familiar faces to potentially join the reunion.
The premise leans directly into the blurred line between fiction and reality, with the actors’ real identities becoming central to the story rather than simply reprising their old characters. It’s a structure that distinguishes ‘Legends’ from a standard nostalgia play, positioning it instead as something closer to a clever reinvention of the source material’s DNA.
FX Entertainment President Nick Grad expressed enthusiasm for the concept, noting the network’s excitement over Hunnam’s pitch. Speaking about the greenlight, Grad said the network “instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision” when Hunnam brought the idea to them, adding that “Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know,” as he told Deadline.
The timing lines up neatly with Hunnam’s recent career surge. His work in ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story,’ where he played the titular suspected serial killer, earned widespread praise and marked his first-ever Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, giving the actor fresh momentum heading into this new project.
Behind the scenes, ‘Legends’ will be produced by FX Productions and 20th Television, with the series set to stream on both FX and Hulu once it debuts. Alongside Hunnam and Groff’s executive producer credits, Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn round out the producing team.
For fans who spent seven seasons watching the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club navigate loyalty, violence, and tragedy in the fictional town of Charming, California, seeing this specific group of actors reassemble carries real weight. The show’s original run made it one of FX’s most-watched series at its peak, and its ensemble cast has remained closely associated with the brand ever since.
While plot details beyond the convention-set premise remain limited, the format alone suggests ‘Legends’ is aiming for something more ambitious than a simple reunion special. Blending the actors’ real personas with a high-stakes thriller plot gives the project a chance to comment on fandom, legacy, and the strange afterlife of a beloved show, all while giving longtime viewers the reunion they’ve wanted for over a decade.
