John Mulaney Stole the Show at the Emmys With a Brutally Funny Presenter Bit Targeting Streamers

Award show presenter segments usually exist to fill time between the categories people actually tune in for, a quick introduction before the envelope opens. Every so often, though, a comedian gets handed the mic and turns those thirty seconds into the moment everyone’s talking about the next morning.

That’s exactly what happened during this year’s Emmy Awards, where the night’s biggest comedic highlight didn’t come from the host or a scripted sketch. Instead, it came from a presenter slot that most viewers probably expected to be forgettable.

John Mulaney took the stage to introduce Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and rather than simply reading off the nominees, he opened with a pointed dig at the streaming industry itself. “It’s these couple of days where you find out just how much you mean to your billion-dollar streamer,” Mulaney said, before mimicking the kind of hollow flattery talent often hears from their platforms during awards season, “‘We love you. We want you to know how important you are to this storytelling family.’ ‘Can I get a plus-one?’ ‘Get out of here.'”

The line landed especially hard given Mulaney’s own current streaming home is Netflix, adding an extra layer of self-aware irony that TheWrap’s coverage of the ceremony pointed out directly, noting it’s definitely not Netflix he was referring to. From there, Mulaney rolled straight into a longer bit built around the idea that men have somehow been historically underrepresented on television.

“This is the best part of the night. Lead actor in a drama, this award is for the guys. Finally, something for the fellas,” Mulaney joked, describing the nominees as “a crop of prom kings” who weren’t “soft like the dad on ‘Bluey.'” He then leaned further into the bit, claiming that for the first three years of television’s existence, “there were no men on it,” just “beauty contests and children talking to hand puppets” until a fictional turning point arrived in the form of Fonzie.

He wasn’t finished skewering the category’s nominees either, cracking that “some of the men in this category do Method acting, and some do regular, less annoying acting,” while noting that no matter the technique, they all managed to know their lines because they’d started reviewing their sides earlier that morning. Mulaney also worked in a reference to DJ Khaled’s infamous stance on marital intimacy, a line pointed enough that NBC’s standards and practices team ended up bleeping it entirely.

Once the joke wrapped, the actual award went to Noah Wyle for his performance in ‘The Pitt,’ giving the category a winner that felt almost secondary compared to the buildup Mulaney had just delivered. The bit fit into a broader pattern for the comedian, who has built a reputation for turning even minor hosting or presenting duties into some of the sharpest material at any given ceremony.

Critics covering the night were quick to notice just how much energy Mulaney injected into what could have easily been a throwaway moment, with more than one outlet floating the idea that the Television Academy should simply hand him hosting duties outright next year. Between the streamer jab, the gender-flipped bit, and the bleeped punchline, Mulaney managed to turn a routine presenter segment into one of the most quoted moments of the entire broadcast.

For a ceremony already packed with historic wins and emotional speeches, it says something that a two-minute presenter bit ended up dominating so much of the post-show conversation.
