Charlize Theron’s Clea Is Reportedly Sneaking Back Into the MCU for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel’s multiverse saga has spent years planting characters and storylines that never quite got the follow-through fans were promised, leaving more than a few dangling threads scattered across recent phases of the franchise. Few of those threads have generated as much ongoing speculation as one blink-and-you-missed-it cameo from a few years back.
That cameo belonged to Charlize Theron, who introduced her Marvel character in a brief but pivotal mid-credits scene that immediately signaled bigger plans were in motion, even if Marvel took its time actually following through. For years now, fans have wondered exactly when, or if, that storyline would ever pick back up.
According to a new report, the answer may finally be arriving. Theron is reportedly set to return as Clea in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ with the update attributed to industry insider Daniel Richtman, a frequent source of Marvel production leaks throughout the film’s lengthy shoot.
Theron’s version of Clea made her MCU debut in the mid-credits scene of ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ confronting Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange about the multiversal damage his actions had caused before pulling him into the Dark Dimension to help fix it. That single scene set up exactly the kind of Incursion-driven storyline now reportedly at the center of ‘Doomsday‘ itself, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom said to be hunting down those responsible for tears in the multiverse.

This isn’t the first time Theron’s involvement in the film has been floated. Speculation about Clea’s return dates back to early 2025, when multiple industry sources suggested both Theron and Cumberbatch could be part of the massive ensemble project, even though neither actor appeared on Marvel’s initial cast announcement of more than twenty-five names.
Theron herself has stayed characteristically tight-lipped about the character’s future. Back in 2023, she told journalist Josh Horowitz that Marvel hadn’t reached out to her at all, joking, “No, I’m not lying. I haven’t got a call, is that bad?” More recently, while promoting Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ in May, she deflected a direct question about the film, telling Elle she was simply “not the person to ask.”
The new report tracks with recent news that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has wrapped its additional photography, with reshoots reportedly including key sequence work tied to Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, among other unconfirmed names. If accurate, Theron’s scenes may have been captured during that same late-stage production window rather than the film’s main shoot.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is now set for release on December 18, 2026, directed by the Russo Brothers from a script by Stephen McFeely. The film has already assembled an enormous returning cast spanning multiple eras of the franchise, including Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Pedro Pascal, and Patrick Stewart, alongside Downey Jr.’s reimagined turn as Doctor Doom.

Given how directly Clea’s introduction tied into the exact kind of multiversal crisis ‘Doomsday’ is reportedly built around, her return would feel less like a random cameo and more like the payoff Marvel has been quietly setting up since 2022. Fans will have to wait for official confirmation, but the pieces certainly seem to be lining up.
