‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Made History as the Highest-Grossing Domestic Movie Ever

Box office records have a way of feeling permanent right up until the moment they finally fall, and few marks looked as untouchable as the one ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ had held for more than a decade. J.J. Abrams’ 2015 blockbuster sat comfortably atop the domestic chart, fending off challengers ranging from Marvel’s biggest crossovers to Disney’s most ambitious sequels along the way.

Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man adventure has spent this summer systematically working through nearly every box office benchmark imaginable. Since opening on July 31, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ shattered the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend with $360 million, crossed $2 billion worldwide faster than almost any film in history, and held the number one spot at the North American box office for six consecutive weekends.

That relentless run has now reached its ultimate milestone. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has officially surpassed ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to become the highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office, reaching $936.773 million after 47 days in theaters and finally unseating a record that had stood since 2015.

‘The Force Awakens’ had held that crown for more than a decade with $936.6 million, a mark so durable it survived a serious challenge from ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in 2019, which came agonizingly close but ultimately fell just short at $858.3 million. Given the significant gap now separating ‘Brand New Day’ from every other film on the all-time chart, this record looks poised to hold for a long stretch to come.

‘Brand New Day’s climb to the top followed one of the fastest milestone runs in box office history. The film became the fastest movie ever to reach $700 million in just 13 days, $800 million in 19 days, and $900 million in 36 days, making it only the second film ever to cross that $900 million threshold domestically after ‘The Force Awakens’ itself.

Globally, the film’s success has been just as staggering, with its worldwide total climbing to $2.45 billion, placing it as the third-highest-grossing movie of all time behind only ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal, the film reflected that momentum in its reception too, settling into a “Certified Fresh” 90 percent critics’ score and a “Verified Hot” 97 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

With the domestic crown now secured, the only question left is whether ‘Brand New Day’ can push far enough to become the first film in history to cross $1 billion at the North American box office, though that milestone would likely require a re-release given the film’s current pace. Either way, this latest Spidey outing has cemented itself as one of the defining box office stories of the year.
