‘Doctor Who’ Is Officially Being Reborn, and the BBC Just Told Producers to “Be Brave”

‘Doctor Who‘ has weathered more than six decades of cast changes, creative pivots, and even complete cancellations, always finding a way to regenerate itself just when fans think the story might be over. That resilience is about to be tested again, following months of uncertainty about exactly where the beloved sci-fi franchise goes next.

That uncertainty began building back in June, when the BBC announced a major creative rethink of the series after showrunner Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf departed, and Disney’s co-production deal, which had helped fund the show’s recent international streaming presence, expired without renewal. Ncuti Gatwa also won’t be returning as the Time Lord, leaving the franchise’s future genuinely wide open.

That period of limbo has now officially ended. The BBC has launched a formal competitive tender for Season 16, inviting production companies to pitch their own vision for the show’s next era in a bake-off-style process, with the broadcaster explicitly calling for ideas that keep ‘Doctor Who’ “relevant, surprising, brave and inspiring for both long-standing fans and new audiences.”

According to the 22-page tender document, the BBC is commissioning what it describes as a “new flagship series of Doctor Who,” covering a multi-episodic series including specials, with an option to extend for a second run. Producers must feature the Doctor in their pitch alongside at least one new companion character, described as needing “a life, relationships, ambitions and personal journey that enrich the series.”

The brief calls for stories that transport audiences across “historical settings to distant futures, alien worlds, and contemporary Earth,” while delivering what the document calls “back of the sofa” scares and genuine tension, all while remaining suitable for a broad family audience. Notably, the BBC is encouraging producers not to lean too heavily on existing franchise lore, instead pushing for fresh original characters, aliens, and themes.

The BBC has left several major structural decisions open for whoever ultimately wins the contract, including whether the new series will be serialized or follow a story-of-the-week format, and how many episodes it will ultimately contain. The broadcaster also clarified it’s “not necessarily looking to work to a strict showrunner model,” suggesting the show could move away from having a single dominant creative voice and instead rely on multiple episodic writers going forward.

The tender does express a preference for production to qualify in Wales, continuing the show’s long-standing regional connection, and the winning company will produce the series on a work-for-hire basis, with all rights remaining with the BBC itself.

Producers interested in bidding have until October 2 to submit their eligibility information, with shortlisted tenderers expected to submit fuller three-page pitches shortly after. A final decision on who takes over the franchise isn’t expected until spring 2027, with the BBC targeting a return to screens sometime in the 2028-29 window.

That leaves plenty still unresolved, including who will actually play the Doctor going forward, following Ncuti Gatwa’s surprise regeneration into a familiar face at the end of “The Reality War.” With Gatwa confirmed not to return and no successor publicly named, the identity of the next Doctor remains one of the franchise’s biggest open questions heading into this new chapter.

The BBC’s tender document ends on a characteristically direct note, simply instructing prospective producers to “Be brave, have fun.” Given the franchise’s history of reinventing itself through regeneration both on screen and behind the scenes, that instruction feels like an especially fitting way to kick off this next chapter.
