Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson’s 2004 Super Bowl Docuseries Moment Is Getting Another Chapter

Few pop culture moments have been replayed and dissected as relentlessly as the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show. The incident, in which Timberlake partially exposed Jackson’s breast during their live performance, led to substantial backlash against Jackson. Nearly 2 decades later, the fallout is still shaping how audiences talk about both stars.

Timberlake, meanwhile, has been keeping a comparatively low profile. He made a guest appearance at Jay-Z’s concert in Paris last month, but he has otherwise been off the radar since his ‘Forget Tomorrow’ global tour. That tour supported his most recent album, ‘Everything I Thought It Was,’ which arrived in March 2024.

That quiet stretch looks like it’s about to end. Variety reports that Timberlake is set to release a four-part docuseries on Apple TV in December, and three sources confirm the project is being described as a “tell-all.” The report was shared as an exclusive by Variety’s official X account on Nov. 2.

The most attention-grabbing detail involves his former duet partner. One source says the series will feature Janet Jackson discussing the infamous “wardrobe malfunction” from the pair’s 2004 Super Bowl performance. It would mark a rare moment of Jackson revisiting the incident alongside the man at the center of it.

Jackson isn’t the only former collaborator who may come up. Another source tells Variety that Timberlake also discusses some of ex-girlfriend Britney Spears’ recent comments in the series. Given how often the two pop stars have been mentioned together in recent years, that could be a major talking point when the project arrives.

Many questions remain unanswered, though. Variety says the series is directed by Fisher Stevens, but further details weren’t available at publication, and reps for Timberlake, Jackson and Apple either had no comment or didn’t respond. Until someone officially confirms the project, it’s worth treating the specifics with caution.

Apple isn’t new territory for Timberlake, either. His relationship with the streamer dates back to 2021, when he starred in the Apple Original film ‘Palmer.’ A docuseries would be a very different kind of project, and a far more personal one.

The Super Bowl moment has also had plenty of screen time already. FX and Hulu announced a documentary on the 2004 halftime scandal in 2021, and ‘Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson’ went on to win a News and Documentary Emmy Award. Jackson later said she and Timberlake had “moved on” from the controversy, as unpacked in her four-part Lifetime docuseries ‘Janet.’

Timberlake has also faced pressure over the years to address it himself. In 2021, he apologized to both Spears and Jackson after a documentary chronicled his behavior toward the two stars. Stereogum notes the incident is one of several that have come under scrutiny as his public persona has taken a nosedive.

That history is what makes this project so intriguing. Stereogum points out that Timberlake appears to have creative control over the series, so it will be interesting to see how much responsibility he takes for past missteps. A tell-all told on his own terms could land as either a genuine reckoning or a carefully managed rewrite.

For now, fans will have to wait for official word from Apple. If the December timeline holds, the conversation around one of pop music’s most debated moments is about to start up all over again.
