Ian McKellen’s First Look as Gandalf in ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ Just Leaked, and It’s Hiding in the Last Place Anyone Expected

Middle-earth is officially back in production, and fans of the original trilogy have spent months hungry for any scrap of set footage from ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.’ Andy Serkis’s return to the franchise, this time behind the camera as director while reprising Gollum himself, has kept anticipation running high since filming began.

That hunger for new footage got a lot more interesting this week, though not in the way anyone expected. A behind-the-scenes clip surfaced online showing Ian McKellen back in full Gandalf costume, complete with the long gray beard and hair fans have missed since his last appearance as the wizard over a decade ago.

The twist came when fans started digging into where exactly this footage originated. It turns out McKellen’s Gandalf beard reveal wasn’t tied to a traditional ‘Hunt for Gollum’ promotional push at all, but instead surfaced through an entirely unexpected connection to musician Troye Sivan.

As it turns out, McKellen recorded and delivered the opening monologue for Sivan’s upcoming music video for his song “Party,” the lead single off his forthcoming fourth studio album, ‘She’s the Best.’ The video leans into a ‘Game of Thrones’-style medieval setting, following Sivan as a battle-weary warrior finally making it back to camp just in time for, fittingly, a celebration.

McKellen leaned fully into his familiar Gandalf cadence for the reading, delivering the line: “The conquest is nearly over. Fires blaze from one end of the realm to another. But what is victory, if not celebrated! For at long last… a party.” It’s a delivery that sounds every bit as weighty as anything he’s said as Gandalf on screen, despite being written for a pop single rather than a fantasy epic.

The pairing might seem bizarre at first glance, but it makes a strange kind of sense given both men’s willingness to embrace playful, genre-bending projects. Regardless of how the collaboration came together, the clip has effectively doubled as the first confirmed look at McKellen back in costume for ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ months ahead of any official studio marketing push.

Beyond the beard reveal itself, the clip confirms that production on the film is actively underway. McKellen, now 87 years old, is stepping back into a role he first originated in 2001’s ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ making his return feel especially significant given how long it’s been since he last appeared as the character.

He won’t be alone in reprising familiar territory. Elijah Wood is set to return as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace is back as Thranduil, while the film also introduces some notable new faces to the world of Middle-earth. Jamie Dornan steps into the role of Strider, playing a younger version of Aragorn originally brought to life by Viggo Mortensen, alongside Leo Woodall as a new character named Halvard and Kate Winslet as a character named Marigol.

The film itself is positioned as a prequel and interquel to ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ following Gandalf and Strider as they track down Gollum in hopes of confirming whether Bilbo Baggins’s ring is truly the One Ring that Sauron has been searching for. That narrative gap gives the production plenty of room to explore corners of Middle-earth’s history the original trilogy never had time to cover.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 17, 2027, giving fans plenty of time to speculate further as more set details inevitably leak out between now and release. If this early Gandalf reveal is any indication, some of those glimpses may keep coming from the most unexpected corners of pop culture.
