Andy Serkis Says Casting for ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ Didn’t Include Any Unnecessary Politically Correct Box-Ticking
Andy Serkis has opened up about the casting approach for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, saying the upcoming Middle-earth movie will address diversity when it fits the story rather than making decisions just to meet outside expectations.
During an interview with the BBC, Serkis was asked about criticism surrounding the Lord of the Rings franchise and what some viewers have described as a lack of diversity in previous films. The interviewer also questioned why the currently announced main cast for The Hunt for Gollum has mostly featured white actors.
Serkis explained that the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien was heavily influenced by European and Norse mythology, which shaped the look and culture of places like the Shire. He pointed out that the story is focused on specific communities and their relationships with the wider world.
Tolkien himself was influenced a lot by Norse mythology; there’s a lot of that feeling, Serkis told the BBC. The Shire feels very, very much like a very, a very white, you know…
The actor and filmmaker continued by explaining that the Hobbits of the Shire are intentionally portrayed as isolated from many parts of Middle-earth.
They’re not very concerned about what goes on beyond the borders of The Shire, but they know they don’t want people coming in, Serkis said.
Serkis also acknowledged that the franchise has faced criticism over representation. However, he said the team behind The Hunt for Gollum wants to stay focused on creating a story that feels natural within Tolkien’s world.
This particular film is somewhat acknowledging that. But we don’t think we will be doing a politically correct just-casting-for-the sake-of-casting-and-ticking-boxes version of the film. So, it’s only where relevant basically, Serkis explained.
The comments come as Warner Bros. prepares to bring audiences back to Middle-earth with a new live-action adventure set between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. The movie will explore the hunt for Gollum and expand on a part of the timeline that has not been fully explored on screen before.
Serkis will not only direct the film but will also return to his famous role as Gollum, the character that made him one of the most recognized performers in motion capture history. The project also reunites several important names from the original Lord of the Rings films, with Ian McKellen returning as Gandalf, Elijah Wood coming back as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace reprising his role as Thranduil.
The cast also includes new additions such as Anya Taylor-Joy, Kate Winslet, Jamie Dornan, and Leo Woodall. The screenplay is being developed by longtime Tolkien collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.
The Hunt for Gollum represents Warner Bros.’ latest attempt to expand the Lord of the Rings universe following the success of Peter Jackson’s original trilogy and the more recent television series The Rings of Power.
