‘Lanterns’ Just Introduced Carol Ferris to the DCU, and Star Sapphire Fans Are Paying Attention

The DCU has been busy stocking its shelves with cosmic characters, and ‘Lanterns’ has become the place where deep-cut comic book lore gets a quiet nod on screen. Some fans wondered whether the HBO series would skip the biggest names from Green Lantern history. The Carol Ferris DCU debut settles at least part of that debate.

It arrives during “Bad Optics,” the episode that jumped ahead 10 years and finally returned to the murder of Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler). The hour is built around loss, so a character from Hal’s past showing up at his funeral makes real dramatic sense. It also carries a lot of history for anyone who knows the comics.

Carol Ferris, played by Amie Mackenzie, had just made her DCU debut in ‘Lanterns’. The post, which paired a still from the episode with comic art of Star Sapphire, passed 323,000 views. ComicBook.com notes that her casting was never confirmed or even teased, so the moment came as a real surprise.

Carol appears at Hal’s sparsely attended funeral, where the mourners are few. She explains that Sheriff Kerry Kane invited her, and she sums up her connection to Hal as history. John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) instantly recognizes her, which suggests their relationship was well known.

Carol introduces herself and asks John to read Hal’s self-penned eulogy. She also drops a pointed remark that the only friendship that stuck with Hal was “the one on his finger,” a clear reference to his ring. She tells John she bets Hal liked him and never said it, which hints that she knew him better than most.

Carol was created by John Broome and Gil Kane and first appeared in Showcase #22 in 1959. She is the daughter of aerospace mogul Carl Ferris and an executive at Ferris Aircraft, where she hired Hal as a test pilot. She has been his longtime love interest ever since.

Her story took a turn when she became the villainous Star Sapphire, one of Green Lantern’s most notorious foes. Nerdist notes that she is now a hero in modern comics and even a member of the Justice League. She also leads the Star Sapphire Corps, also known as the Violet Lantern Corps, whose rings are powered by love.

In live action, Carol was previously played by Blake Lively in the 2011 ‘Green Lantern’ film, per Nerdist. Mackenzie is stepping into a role that has been reimagined many times.

Mackenzie has an unusual career path. Denver-based actress was a fixture of Colorado theater for decades before moving to screen work. After surviving cancer, she booked her first on-screen part in ‘Better Call Saul’ at age 53, and has since appeared in ‘The Madison’ and ‘Mountainhead’.

Her credits include ‘Dexter: Original Sin’, ‘1923’ and ‘MacGruber’. It’s a résumé full of memorable supporting turns, which suits a character who makes a big impact in a small amount of screen time.

The series hasn’t established that Carol is Star Sapphire, only that she exists, had a relationship with Hal and cared enough to attend his funeral.

Still, there is tantalizing history. In one major comic storyline, Star Sapphire killed Katma Tui, John’s wife, which left John blaming Hal. There is no reason to assume ‘Lanterns’ will adapt that story, but it shows how tangled Carol’s ties to John could become.

It’s hard to believe how small her role is, and the episode doesn’t indicate whether we will see Carol again. Her history could be explored in future seasons, possibly even as Star Sapphire. For now, she is a rich piece of Hal’s backstory and a hint that the DCU’s version of Hal was far more human than his reputation suggests.

‘Lanterns’ returns on Sunday, September 27 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max, with Hal’s Halogram and a vault full of secrets waiting.
