Chris Pratt’s James Reece Isn’t Done: ‘Savage Son’ Gives ‘The Terminal List’ Its Next Mission
Few streaming heroes have had a longer wait between missions than James Reece. The former Navy SEAL at the center of ‘The Terminal List’ went years between seasons, and now the franchise looks like it has plenty of life left in it. Pratt’s return for a new Reece story is the latest sign that Prime Video isn’t ready to close the book on this world.
The timing is hard to ignore for anyone following the franchise. Prime Video’s military thriller has just returned with a new batch of episodes, and the franchise has already branched out with a spinoff, so the appetite for more is clearly there.
Chris Pratt will again play Reece in ‘Savage Son,’ a new series based on the third novel in Jack Carr’s ‘The Terminal List’ book series, Variety reported. The project comes from Amazon MGM Studios, MRC and Civic Center Media, and it arrives only about 2 weeks after the second season of the flagship show debuted on Prime Video.
Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, said ‘Savage Son’ takes the story into its most intense chapter yet. He also praised the dedication Pratt and the team bring to every episode.
The big open question is how the show will be labeled. It remains unclear whether ‘Savage Son’ will be the third season of ‘The Terminal List’ or a separate project set in the same world, though sources say a standalone series is the more likely route.
That uncertainty matters for fans, since the franchise has already stretched beyond a single show. ‘The Terminal List: Dark Wolf,’ the prequel starring Taylor Kitsch as Ben Edwards, premiered on August 27, 2025 and wrapped its first season in September, and Edwards is a former Navy SEAL turned CIA operative. It’s also not yet certain who, if anyone, from the main cast would join Pratt in the new series, even though the novel features some familiar characters alongside Reece.
The book arrived on April 14, 2020, and follows ‘True Believer’ in the series. In the novel, Reece takes refuge in the mountains of Montana while he recovers from brain surgery. From there, the publisher’s description says, he must infiltrate the Russian mafia and turn the hunters into the hunted.
The television version is described as a fast-paced military thriller in which Reece faces his most personal and dangerous mission yet. It is billed as a blend of military action, espionage and wilderness survival, and it explores the thin line between civilization and the savage instincts that emerge when survival becomes personal. Author Jack Carr has also said he traveled to Siberia to research the third book.

‘The Terminal List’ launched in July 2022, and the wait for its second season stretched to 4 years because of the Hollywood strikes in 2023. That second season premiered on October 21, with all 8 episodes released at once, and it draws on elements of Carr’s second Reece novel, ‘True Believer.’ The show also stars Constance Wu, Tom Hopper and Taylor Kitsch alongside Pratt. The original run, an 8-part series, was adapted from Carr’s debut novel, which first hit shelves in March 2018.

Pratt also appeared in ‘Dark Wolf’ in a smaller supporting role, while Hopper played Lieutenant Raife opposite Kitsch’s Edwards. Carr’s source material gives the studio room to keep going as well, since ‘Savage Son’ was followed by ‘The Devil’s Hand,’ ‘In the Blood’ and ‘Only the Dead,’ with a prequel novel, ‘Cry Havoc,’ arriving in 2025.
Now that ‘Savage Son’ has been ordered, the pipeline looks a lot healthier than it did during those long gaps. With a spinoff already behind it, a second season fresh on the platform and another novel lined up for adaptation, Prime Video seems committed to keeping Reece in the field, whatever label the new series ends up with.
Should ‘Savage Son’ be Season 3 of ‘The Terminal List’ or a standalone series?
