Marvel’s marketing machine is running at full speed as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ edges closer to theaters, and brand partnerships are carrying a big share of the hype. Few of them have been as visible as the long-running team-up between Marvel and Jeep. The latest chapter of that collaboration is a fresh commercial that mixes characters from 2 corners of the Marvel universe.

The ad is not the first time the automaker and the studio have joined forces, and it helps to understand how the partnership got here. It also says a lot about how the studio wants audiences to think about the crossover at the heart of the movie

The 2 companies began by celebrating the 85-year legacies of 2 American icons: the Jeep Wrangler and Captain America. That first phase produced the Jeep Wrangler America250 edition, which carries red, white and blue decals, red tow hooks, a Jean Blue soft top and a limited-edition Captain America shield tire cover.

Jeep is also the exclusive automotive partner of America250, the bipartisan organization charged by Congress with leading the commemoration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Marvel Comics added an original, illustrated, limited-edition cover for a reprinted comic book, which comes with the purchase of the special edition. The brands also planned to promote ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in the final stretch of the year, and this new spot is the clearest sign of that plan in action.

The new Jeep spot for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ features Captain America alongside Johnny Storm, The Thing and H.E.R.B.I.E. The on-screen text in the clip reads “Wherever Earth’s mightiest heroes are called,” a line that frames the Fantastic Four members as part of the same roster as Cap.

That grouping matters. Putting Captain America in the same commercial as Fantastic Four characters reflects the film’s biggest selling point, which is the collision of different heroes in one story. Joseph Quinn plays Johnny Storm, Ebon Moss-Bachrach plays Ben Grimm, and Anthony Mackie plays Sam Wilson, the current Captain America, in the movie.

Fans also spotted something extra in the footage: a first look at Doctor Doom’s castle and tower. Robert Downey Jr. plays the villain in the film, and the Russo brothers have called his costume their favorite in the entire MCU. Seeing even a glimpse of the character’s home turf in a car commercial is the kind of bonus that keeps fans pausing and rewatching.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Fresh Look at Thor and Yelena Belova Shows Marvel Is Going Back to Basics

The inclusion of H.E.R.B.I.E. is a fun detail. The robot companion of the Fantastic Four was shown with a new design in the official trailer, in a scene set in the X-Mansion. In that sequence, a team that includes Yelena Belova, Reed Richards, Captain America and Shang-Chi wanders through Xavier’s mansion, and H.E.R.B.I.E. can be seen looking back and forth between Reed and Yelena with what appears to be disbelief when she ignores Reed’s warning. Pedro Pascal plays Reed in the film, and a team-up of this size means even the robot sidekick gets screen time in the marketing.

The partnership is not limited to the American market either. A themed Jeep has also been unveiled for the movie, and the campaign is being treated as a global push rather than a one-off commercial. That fits the scale of the film, which Disney delayed from its original May slot to give production more time. It now arrives on December 18, putting it just ahead of Christmas.

The movie is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who also made ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Its cast is enormous. Alongside the names above, it includes Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Chris Evans, who is returning as Steve Rogers. Filming took place at Pinewood Studios in England, with location work in England and Bahrain. ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ also directed by the Russos, is set to follow a year later.

Jeep is not the only brand getting in on the fun. Other promotional spots have leaned into the film’s more playful side, including a KFC tie-in in which Colonel Sanders strikes a deal with Doctor Doom to keep the chain standing. Marvel Studios has also released a promo in which Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang is confused by multiple Captains America assembling for the big confrontation with Downey’s Doom.

Taken together, the commercials give fans a steady drip of new character pairings and set pieces well before the movie opens. The Jeep ad stands out because it pairs a real-world vehicle with the heroes who are expected to share the screen, and because it hints at the villain waiting for them.

Which detail from Jeep’s new ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ ad has you most excited?
